Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    XBasic: Rename Archive Table (tutorial)

I am using Dr. Peter Wayne's tutorial and am currently trying to "Add
a Button to Rename a Table" (page 241). After typing and checking very
carefully, I clicked the syntax checker. It gave me a message "will
not parse, line 6 results unexpected" (or to that effect). I rechecked
my typing and could find no error. Then I checked against the window
shown on page 244 and found that the text in the window neither matched
my typing nor the instructions. I tried changing my window to match the
window in the book...still got the same error message.

Questions: 1. How does XBasic count lines?

    2. Why is the window on page 244 different from the
    instructions and my typing?

    3. Is this book for a prior version of A5 and, if so, how
can I get past these inconsistencies?

    4. If none of the above is applicable, what can the problem
    possibly be?

RE: XBasic: Rename Archive Table (tutorial)

Thank you for discovering this error. The screen capture shot on p 243 (Fig 22-19) is not exactly the same as the code typed in Fig 22-18.

You must, however, have made a typing error. If you typed exactly as shown in Fig 22-18 then line 6 would be the line
    new_name=ui_get_text(etc)

RE: XBasic: Rename Archive Table (tutorial)

Thanks for replying. After I placed the questions, I deleted and started
over and was succesful. I still do not know what the problem with my
      first effort was.

I also still cannot figure out the line count. I had an obvious error in
my second effort (parenthesis missing) but could not match it up to the
line count. I was able to find and fix it due to it being so obvious, but
if it had been obscure, I could not match up the line it was on to the
count the message gave closer than within two lines, and I probably never
would have figured out what it was talking about.

To me, this program is difficult, but I am making progress. It is sort
of a double whammy on me inasmuch as I never worked in windows until
April of this year. I think maybe I've progressed from about kindergarten
to second grade since I placed my first question.

It certainly helps to be able to ask a question and be reasonably assured
      that someone will answer.

      Thanks again for your help.
