Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cant find whats wrong

    Can anyone find whats wrong in this script,

    receiv = table.open(a_db_current_path+"receivables invoices.dbf")
    query.description="current customer"
    query.order="Recno()"
    query.options="M"
    query.filter= "CUST_ID='" + CUST_ID.text + "' .and.adjustment=0.and.payment_amount=0"
    i = receiv.query_create()
    recs_found = i.records_get()
    if recs_found > 0
    --------------
    the filter works fine it actually filters the table with the Correct amount of records, but even when records are found the recs_found always = 0, I checked it with the Debug, is there maybe something misspelled or what?

    Thanks

    RE: Cant find whats wrong

    Dan,

    I think this is your problem.

    '" + CUST_ID.text + "'

    I don't think the ' should be there as the ' causes the resyt of the line not to be read. The ' is used when documenting code. In other words, if the code was
    query.order="Recno()" you would precede the documentation by using the ';
    'this sets the query order by using record number. Thus this line would not print.

    Hope this helps,

      I don't understand this:

      query.filter= "CUST_ID='" + CUST_ID.text + "' .and.adjustment=0.and.payment_amount=0"

      You might try modifying that to something like:

      query.filter = "CUST_ID = CUST_ID.text .AND. adjustment = 0 .AND. payment_amount = 0 "

        RE: Cant find whats wrong

        I'm wrong with that expression, I believe. The manual says to place the right side of the equation into a variable first, such as:

        CIDtext = CUST_ID.text
        query.filter = "CUST_ID = CIDtext .AND. adjustment = 0 .AND. payment_amount = 0 "

        Sorry about the oversight..I'll quote the pertainent passage from the manual here:

        NOTE: The query.filter expression cannot directly refer to Layout level variables on the form, or to form controls. Your script must set a local script variable to the value of the layout level variable, or the form control. Alternatively, declare variables on the form as Session level. For example, the following code does not work:
        query.filter = "state = which_state.value "
        Whereas, this code does work:
        state_to_query = which_state.value
        query.filter = "state = state_to_query"

          RE: Cant find whats wrong

          Are you sure that the query filter is working? You don't have any spaces around the 2 .and.'s. Usually I would write something like
          "cust='"+custid.text+"' .and. payment=0 .and. total=0"

          I don't know if the space before and after the .and. is
          necessary, but I always put it in. You may also need
          parentheses, as in
          "cust='"+cust_id.text+"' .and. (payment=0) .and. (tot=0)"

          The filter
          (payment=0) .and. (tot=0)
          is different from
          (payment=0 .and. tot)=0
          which in turn is different from
          payment =(0 .and. tot)=0
          and Alpha Five may have trouble parsing your filter
          properly without the spaces.

            Thanks all for your responses,
            I have to apologize my mistake was in my "IF" command, not with the query filter or the recs_found, the filter works fine and the recs_found was also correct, it just so happened that the examples I used when I tried to debug the script were actually 0 records found, Again I Thank you all and I apologize.

            Dr. Wayne,
            Its probably good practice to use spaces around the and's, it helps avoiding mistakes, but as you mentioned I don't think its necessary for the filter, and about the parentheses, I tried it using them it worked fine, but as I said it also worked fine with out the parentheses. If you dont mind, I would appreciate if you could explain why you felt it could make a difference, after all understanding the concept of the phrase is much more useful then just copping it.
            Thank You

              I wasn't sure whether A5 would try to convert some of the nnumeric values into logical values. It turns out that it doesn't happen, so it's not an issue.
