Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Jumping records revisited

I think we have been here before but we have a problem with data entry into a table with a large number of records spread over several tabs on a form in that in the middle of data entry the screen will for no apparent reason jumpe to a different record. There are several lookup tables used to fill in the data and we have switched of all the linking field entries as I thought that might be the cause. The problem is sporadic and not repeatable on demand. The worst kind !! Any ideas or similar experiences.

    RE: Jumping records revisited

I don't know about 'jumping to other records', but the default behavior of tabbed objects is often confusing. As you know, when you press the Tab key, Alpha Five advances to the next field. When it reaches the last field on a tab page, it advances to the next *record*... not the next field on the next tab page. Depending on how your form is set up to handle record saves, this may cause the record pointer to 'jump' to another place in your table.

If this is what's happening, the solution has been documented in this forum a number of times. I don't have the details with me at the moment, but could furnish them if you wish. Basically you add another field to each tab page and set it as the last field in tab order for that page. In an OnArrive script you cause Alpha Five to navigate to the next tab page, and set the focus on the first field you want there. Then you set the properties of the field to hide it from view. In the case of the last tab page, the onArrive script should cause Alpha Five to navigate back to the first tab page.

    Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your input Tom, we were aware of this and have an object as the last item on each tab to do just that. I will double check but I don't think this is the problem but thanks again anyway.

        RE: Jumping records revisited

        Bob,

I had/have this problem with Alpha Four version 6. I'd be looking at information from one record on the screen and the tabbed-subform would have information from a different record. I'm sorry, I never indulged into the cause of this problem as it was one of the smaller one's that happened less frequentally. Actually, I don't recall having it happen in quite some time. Maybe it has something to do with not having enough memory or processing power, as I have Alpha Four loaded onto a pretty quick machine and haven't seen this for a while.

Thanks, and I'll keep my ears open to this one.
