Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Buttons and Forms

Please refer to the attached questions and scripts files. They are text files. I hope they can be accessed by this forum.

      RE: Buttons and Forms

In your first question you want to open your form in read only (view) mode, and then go to 'change' mode by doubleclicking on a field.

Alpha five vers 4 permits you to make the fields in the form (and the form itself if you wish) 'read only', by restricting changes, deletes, or enters.

You might benefit from studying Dr. Wayne's article: "Turning Off Modeless Data Entry in Versions 3 and 4" at his website: www.learn alpha.com

If I recall correctly, he illustrates one way to approximate what you are after.

        RE: Buttons and Forms

In your 3rd question you ask whether it's possible to return to 'view' mode from 'change' mode by hitting the ESC key.

I suppose you might be able to write an onKey script which changes the properties of the form so that changes, enters and deletes are restricted.

In my own work if I first present the user with a form that cannot be edited, I give them a button to change it, a button to delete it, a button to enter new one.

These lead to different forms which are used to do the data entry. These forms must be closed with a save or cancel button. If it's save, then as the form is closed, the first form reappears and it's still in 'view' mode. If it's cancel, the same thing happens.

In other cases, when the form is first presented it comes up in 'change' mode, and I never put it back in 'view' mode.

        Hope this helps.

          RE: Buttons and Forms

Gary, in your second question you present an onKey script in which you trap 'C' and then remove the restrict_change property on your form so the user can edit the fields. Your script includes .activate() statements for each field on the form. You want to know how to avoid having the focus move to the first field on the form. The focus is moving because you are activating each field. This is not necessary. These activate statements are not needed to go into 'change' mode, setting the restrict_change property to false is all that's needed.

I'd try commenting out all the .activate() statements. Then see how the form behaves. I don't believe the focus will move off the field which had focus when the C was pressed, and I think data entry can begin there. If you find that the focus does, in fact, still move to the first field, then you will need to modify your onKey script to return focus to the current field after the restrict_change property is modified for the form. We can help with this if you need it.

Let us know how things turn out.
