The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 is too difficult

    I have really tried to get this thing working for me, but it is beyond my ken.
    Yes, I did get the usps bar code to print on labels, but could not get them to print the second time I tried. they come up on screen, but I do not know how to get them to print.
    As for "sorting" for get it! in the browse screen, click a field and sort a-z and get maybe maybe not, but go and ask for z-a, works perfectly.
    Ended up with names not being deleted that I had asked it to delete, but was able to delete when I was in a4v4 and did a "pack."
    Where is the backup deal?
    I had to print my labels from a4v4 again this month.
    I quit.

    I am surprised at your problems.
    Why don't you describe your specific problems here. I am sure someone
    will help you over the bumps.
    Alpha5 ids far superior to the DOS version.
    There is a learning curvr in going from a DOS version to a Windows
    version. Be patient. It will be worth it.

    Explain your difficulties in sufficient detail. You will be
    helped.

      Selig is right!!

      A number of us have had some quite perplexing problems (at least to us) and we've been helped. I've also seen some very inovative atempts at trying something new. It is always a team effort. Most of us would not be where we are today (with A5) if it weren't for this msg board. That's not saying A5 is unusualy hard to learn (Try Paradox if you think A5 is a problem)but with the help of folks on this board, we're able to attempt projects that are for the more advanced users.

        They're right: all of us have needed and received help with Alpha Five because it's so much more versitile and powerfull that Alpha Four. It's not uncommon for any of us to be very knowledgable in one area of Alpha Five and still ignorant in another.

        In fact, it happened to me just last week. A real mind-bender. Couldn't get my head around it. I posted the problem and within 24 hours had an answer. (Thanks again, Tom.)

        Everyone here is helpful and supportive. Stay with Alpha Five, it's definitely worth it -- especially when you consider the features that version five will include. This is the first MAJOR update of this product in quite a while. As a reviewer, I would even go so far as to say it represents a new generation of the program; not just a new version.

          I'm not a database wiz by any sense of the imagination. I too started out in Alpha Four, with version 6. That product work, and until I get fully transferred over to Alpha Five, it continues to "work great" for me here at work.

          I did purchase Alpha Five Version 3. Yuck, I could do no right with it. It sat on the shelf. When version 4 was release I waited a while and then bought it. At first I thought that it would be a dust collector like version 3 was to me. But I think between my slowly increasing knowledge over time of how things are/can be done with databases and the improvements of version 4 over version 3, I slowly started to like/enjoy version 4. I began to get a "feel" for the product and accomplished things. Like I said, I'm "not" a wiz, but version 4 has definately grown on me. The more I use, the more I like. I've found that there are things that can be done in A5 that I could not figure out in A4, and they can be done easily.

          My suggestion, as per my experience, would be this. DO NOT try to do a wholesale move over to A5-v4!!! Instead, pick your easiest, and most simple applications/tables and move them over one at a time with the intention that you're not going over wholesale until you feel that you get a firm grasp on the product. A4 and A5 are NOT the same and you will have a hard time in the transfer, unless you're as bright as some of the people on this board that are "always" so willing to offer help and advice, or you get the experience with A5 under your belt.

          Again, when I first started out with A5, I didn't like it at all. But the more I use it the more I like it, the more I could do with it. I can gaurantee that one day A4 will be a memory (A good one at that) and we'll be moved over to A5.

          One important thing...this board is priceless, and the people who frequent it and help other out...is priceless.

            I agree with Mike. Don't try to convert anything complicated from A4 to A5 right off the bat. Too much pressure and frustration. I started by doing a whole new, yet relatively simple application in A5. As I've gained experience, only now have I started to convert A4 applications over. Understanding A5 and feeling comfortable with it makes a world of difference in the conversion. Probably for most of us, if the A4 applications continue to work, they can continue to be used while we learn A5. Also, this board is more helpful than a shelf full of books. Use the search engine because chances are, any problem you encounter someone else has asked about in the past.

              Let me add my voice to the others who have encouraged you to hang in there.

              Alpha Four enabled us to build some pretty sophisticated applications. It's been my experience that trying to 'port' a complex A4 application is *not* the place to start in Alpha Five. Instead, I recommend starting with small sections of the original application. Learn how to pass variable information between forms. Learn the various ways to set a particular 'view' of your recordset. (In Alpha Five there are several different ways to do it and this sometimes leads to confusion.) Dr. Wayne's books are *highly recommended*, too.

              When your development effort runs aground drop us a note in this forum. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the timely help you will receive...
