Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Wierd, Wierd, Wierd Happenings!

This is a puzzeler. Wierd things are happening.

Two table, one set database. Report is based on the set. Now the wierd stuff.

I entered this expression into the Report's Detail Properties filter:

    between(Income->Date,Var->Askd_Enter_Begin_Date,Var->Askd_Enter_End_Date)

    Click the expression button and:

Sometimes get the message, Invalid Field Value.

Sometimes the prompt for the end date pops up before the prompt for the begin date.

Sometimes can click OK the end date prompt pops up before the begin date prompt.

Sometimes the above expression is typed in letter by letter with the above results. Sometimes it's type in and it works with no hangups.

Sometimes the above expression is copied in from another report, sometimes it works and sometimes any one of the above happens.

Most the time, it shows only records for the year 1998 rather than '91 - '00.

Once I got it to show all records but that stopped.

I've packed the tables, ran scan disk (no errors), even tried kissing the computer. It didn't like that either. Hmm, maybe I forgot a breath mint! I did brush my teeth. What more does it want??

If you've followed my previous post, you're somewhat familar with the situation. Stan (Bless his heart)finally got the files I zipped to him, straighted out. I tried what he did (all but the update operation as I couldn't figure out how to apply the Remspecial, I'm tired).

I could copy his zipped files but I would like to know what's causing the problem. I'm afraid if I don't, it could crop up again and when this little gem is deployed, I don't need it going 51-50 (crazy).

Does Alpha have a program that anaylizes databases, finds bad expressions or whatever? Or is there a software program that will do this?

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

    Kenn,
The invalid field rule message shows up when the ask variables are still empty and the expression won't evaluate. I've found ask variables more reliable when used with > and

      Ohlen,

Thanks. Yes, I knew that but just hadn't experienced how unstable it is. Perhaps that's the reason for the incomplete data as well. Will try it with a form.

        Ken,

The update was done with Operations, New, Update, use the genie, General, assign a calculated value to a field, choose one of the two case number fields, expression is remspecial(same field name in quotes), other fields no, all records.

        Have a good weekend.

          Stan,

I was close but not quite close enough.

I had PrintShop v10 on my machine and it was locking up all the time. It finally wouldn't load so I uninstalled it. Perhaps this may have had some effect on things. Who knows?

A computer DOES have a mind of it's own! Just when you think you've got it figured out, the rules change. Sounds familiar? But, alas, after nearly 35 years, it's the rule changing that keeps things interesting.

          Thanks,

            Just like women.

I told this story for many years, just remembered it.

Early in our marriage, my wife asked me to rearrange the furniture in the bedroom. Puzzled, I asked her in which direction she wanted the bed moved, assuming she wanted more room to one side or the other.

"Up", she said. She wanted a little more space underneath the bed so the storage units she had purchased would slide in easily.

So I did with some minor carpentry.

Today is our twenty-eighth wedding anniversary.

The rules they are a changin', constantly.

Yah Stan and we MEET the challenge. But what a challenge it is at times. Frustrating but fun. (At least for me!)
