Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I am doing a book on the Kennedy assassination and I am try to figure out the the data base and tables could use some advice?

    RE: new boy

"I am try[ing] to figure out the the data base and tables"

If you havc a specific question post it here. Contributors to this site are usually quite generous in helping out with individual problems.

If you just want a general description and introduction you could order Peter Wayne's book from the Alpha Software site.

(Or you could just sit yourself down on a grassy knoll and read the manual.)

(old enough to have read most of the speculations)

      RE: new boy

My understanding of the (new to Me) Alpha 5 v4 I wondering if the data base is one and the tables are the 10- or 12 tables that would make up the inFo on the specifics. Such as:!. NaMES OF REPORTERS;Government officials, Law enforcemnet etc etc.

        RE: new boy

        You are correct.

A database to Alpha Five is a collection of tables and their associated layouts (reports, labels, letters, forms, browses). Within a database you can create sets of tables. The benefit of sets is that you don't have to extablish a relationship each time you wish to use information from more than one table, it is pre-defined.

Take a look at the sample invoice database that comes with Alpha for more specifics.
        There can be only one.

          RE: new boy

my understanding is the use of terms, I guess. Tabels and recofd and filds are the thing. Maybe I can proceed with some authority. Taanks. Don

            RE: new boy

Tables are groups of records which contain their data in fields. If we were to compare to a spreadsheet format, a table is a worksheet, a record is a row, a field is a cell.

            Any help?
            There can be only one.

              RE: new boy

Thanks Stan I get the Idea. Don

                RE: new boy

Stans the man. I think A5 courses through his veins.

                  RE: new boy

Sounds lile you are right. Thanks Don

                    RE: new boy

Yes, indeed, Stan is quite knowledgable and quick to respond to problems, and quite witty to boot. (There are others, as well, who have helped me a great deal, though - and I must give kudos to them as well...Ohlen, Mick...) But we still need a Ms Alpha for the conference :) I'm not suggesting myself - don't know as much about Alpha as a lot of these "guys". But I'm sure there's an "Eve" out there who has Alpha running through her veins. What would be really fun at this conference is to have an "expressions" competition (no, not gramatical expressions), or the like, between Mr Alpha and Ms Alpha - the winner to receive a tour of the Alpha Headquarters, arriving there in a limo, sitting in the back chatting away with Selwin.

(Just having fun on a Friday morning :) Have a great weekend, everyone!)

                      RE: new boy

How about a vote? I'll nominate Wanda on the Ms. ticket :)

Heh, how silly we get after too much coding :)

                        RE: new boy

No way, Hose A! I'll be the Dangling Participle queen, though. But thanks for the vote.

Too much coding, too much coffee, not enough "free" time, whatever. For me, it's too many teenagers in my house this weekend - 6 in all! (I'm scared!)

Okay, I'm stopping now. I'll behave like a professional for the rest of the day. I'm sure Selwyn and my boss would both appreciate it.

                          RE: new boy

Without A MS life is not worth living. Don

                            RE: new boy

I can be counted on to vote for the MS representation
