Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated field returns field name

I have a report generated from a crosstab. It is a very simple report with calculated fields (total)in the report footer. It is these fields that are returning the field name instead of adding the column.

    Roz,

I had this happpen to me, only mine ocurred on a form with subforms. Don't know why and I'm don't remember what I did to solve the problem. I do remember deleting the field and redoing it. I suspect this involves a set so recheck the links, indices, etc.

Hopefully, someone will know why this reason this occurs.

    Good Luck,

I believe this is how Alpha Five tells you there's something wrong with the calculated field. You might check each expression carefully to verify, for example that each field referenced in the expression is actually present in the table or set upon which the report is based.

This is a basic field created by the calculated field wizard to total field named "19990715" created from a crosstab db of staffhrs.dbf

I tried that several times, even used the wizard. There are no links other than having created this db from crosstabbing the original db.

              Roz,

You might check the structure of the table created by the crosstab to be sure it is numeric. Sometimes the way you set up the crosstab results in improper field characteristics. If you are tracking employee hours by day, the first line of the crosstab should be the "employee ID" summarized by column. The next line should be the date expression (i.e. dtoc(date_field)) summarized by row. The third line should be the "number_hours" field summarized by total. If the "number_hours" field in the master table is numeric, the resulting crosstab would have a field value for each employee on each date for which there is a record,in a numeric format. This field can then be totalled in the footer.

RE: Calculated field returns field name

Alpha doesn't like fields or tables to be named as numbers. If you must use a "number named" field, precede it with an underscore or some other innocuous character.

This may be part of the problem.
                There can be only one.

                  Roz,

Make sure the field width (in table, form, report etc.)is sufficient to hold the total created by the crosstab operation.

It think that was the problem. In the older version my crosstab columns were converted to column 1, column 2, and so on. Thanks everyone for you help.

I haven't had this problem in quite awhile, but
I agree with William. If I made the field width
larger (wider) it would work. Don't understand
                      why, but it worked.
