Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

LABEL PRINTING . WHAT A PROBLEM

    Hi
I am trying to design a customer and invoice database.
what I want to do is enter the customers name and address then print the labels .
Then go back fill the order and scan out the product.
I have a regular ink jet printer and would like to use 1x2.58in
3 across labels. But here is the problem. if I print 30 labels and they all fit on a sheet it is all well and good. But if I only want to print 1 or 2 then I have to
use a whole sheet and use the top 2 labels. How do I go back if I wanted to print a few more and reposition the labels that print to a different position on the page?
If I cant do that I would be wasting a whole page of labels each time I wanted one or a few?
    can anyone help?
    Thanks
    John

RE: LABEL PRINTING . WHAT A PROBLEM

Two possible "kludges" come to mind. On the second printing to a sheet with some labels used, the user should specify the number of labels needed plus the number already used. All they loose then is the "ink".

If the label page is symmetrical, the user could reverse the sheet in the printer.

Also, if the labels print from a table, you could write code to ask the user for the starting position and add that mamy dummy records (that might print say a .) and then print the real records.
    There can be only one.

      Hi
well it sounds as if their is a solution.
I like the first choice but I have looked in the book and it doesnt tell
you how to specify those parameters.?
As far as the code goes, unfortunatly I dont have a clue of where to begin.
      Thanks

RE: LABEL PRINTING . WHAT A PROBLEM

For the first suggestion you could sp[ecify the number of labels to print as

        ASKN_Labels_Used_on_Page+ASKN_Number_to_Print_

        in the label properties.

Theis would print the number you want. Might get messy if there 4 labels left across the bottom of a page of 16 and the user didn't reverse the page. Labels used would be 12, Number to Print could be 1, would print 12 on the label backing and the last 1 in the label area (left bottom row.)
        There can be only one.

          John,

It sounds like that you may want to invest in a LABEL PRINTER. My customers love those things because they
save so much time by not having to hunt, search, and
load labels.(...then reloading regular paper.) They started off with one label printer, but now everybody
          (20)has one.

They come in various label sizes and have proven reliable.

          Just a suggestion.

I know that Avery LabelPro 3.0 will let you start printing on the next available label from a sheet of labels that has had labels removed.

We used to hand write package ID labels and tape them to boxes that we ship out. We then swithed to a 4" x 6" continuous fed label, 1-up and perforated between each label, that prints from an okidata printer. Best move we ever made. We print one label for each package. Information for each label is stored in its' own table that gathers information from the orders table. All we do is enter the order number and package quantity, save, and print. However, I can't stand the noise from the dot matrix printer so we're looking to switch to a Zebra thermal transfer label printer. A customer has one and when you hit "print", boom, there's your label. It's all been a "real" time saver.

            Thanks,
            Mike

We had a similar problem and solved it by getting an inexpensive pin feed dot matrix printer and using continuous labels. I'm not sure they are available in 1 x 2 5/8 though.

                Hi
Thanks for your help. That is very close ,it appears that that code needs a little more.
I placed that code in the number of labels to print and it
                asked me 2 questions.
if I put labels to print is 1 and the labels used is 5. then it prints 6 of the first label which is great but it also prints 6 of the second label.
what I need is to do is print 6 of the first to get it into position and
one each of the others. I gusss I should have mentioned that I was going to be printing somewhere between 40 to 75 labels at a time.
I just didnt want a bunch of sheets with labels left in positions
                thatI couldnt use.
What I am trying to do is .
I have made a designed a label that only prints todays customers based on date. This way I can enter all the customer in then I set the filter to only todays date I also set sort order on cust number.
                Thanks again

                  Hi
I am considerind that but what I wanted was to key in the customers names and address then bar code in the orders.
If I use a labeler will that work in my alpha 5 customers table or does it come with its own software?

What version of Alpha5 are you using?
I have a small application I wrote in version 1 that prints labels and allows you to select the label you want. It may give you an idea how to approch the problem with your application.
