Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Starting an application from the Windows menu

I created an application, titled "P3", in A5, version 1. It works great. I created a button to access it directly from the Windows screen. That button contains the following command line:

    C:A5A5.EXE -A=C:A5DBASEP3.APD

(DBASE is a subdirectory under A5 that I created)

I have tried to alter this command line for A5,V4 but cannont get the application to start when clicked. It takes me into Alpha Five but not to my application.

    Any suggestions?

    Gary,

This is mine. The exclamation ! represents the back slash.

    Target C:!A5V4!Alpha5.exe "C:!Ogf!OG Fraud.adb" -NOSPLASH

    Start in: C:!Ogf

Translate yours into this and it should work.

Gary, I just posted a full listing of all the command line options under a later post titled something like "Command Line Start A5". That should give you everything you need.

        Cal,

Your commands are helpful but it still doesn't solve my problem. The following command line: (NOTE: The ! represents the backslash)

        "C:!PROGRAM FILES!A5V4!ALPHA5.EXE" -NOSPLASH -A=C!PROGRAM FILES!A5V4!DBASE!APS.APD

takes me into the Alpha Five program but not to my application, which is named APS. The following command line worked perfectly for this same application in A5, V1:

        C:!A5!A5.EXE -A=C!A5!DBASE!APS.APD
(NOTE: DBASE is a sub-directory I created in Alpha 5)

        What's wrong?

RE: Starting an application from the Windows menu

          Get rid of the -A=

You should use something like this:

          "C:!Program Files!A5V4!Alpha5.exe" "C:!database!Lansdale!Employee Information.adb"

Try this from the Start|Run command line, if it works, you can add the other options (nosplash, title, etc.)

          Good luck

Is APD a typo for ADB?

RE: Starting an application from the Windows menu

You are trying to launch a *.apd file in V4 which I don't think is allowed.

Have you actually created an A5V4 database? This is the *.ADB "container" file that V4 uses as its control center. You have to explicitly add all the tables and sets from the V1 app to the .ADB file before you can run it in V4.

You can also add any card stacks from the V1 app to a V4 database, but I don't think you can use one to start the application.

Why don't you go to the windows explorer and find the file with the extension .adb and just create a shortcut for your program.

The only problem with this method is the -nosplash does not seem to work

Yes, you can use the -A parameter from the commandline.
I have a windows script that runs each night to do some maintenance on a database and use the following commandline:

                  Alpha5.exe signup.adb -A=test.apd
                  (paths omitted..must be included, however)

The .apd loads and executes first, then the startup form for the database loads and executes, if defined. I have not tried this without having a startup form defined.

                  It can be very handy.

                    Tom,

Thanks for the help. It works.

One other question. In the original A5, V1 application, I had a button called "Exit the Program". The event scripting/action of this button for the OnPush was:

                    card_return()

This button closed out the application and took the user right back to the Windows desktop.

I made this same button with the same script for the V4 application but it just closes out the form and takes me to the Control Panel. What can I do so it closes out the application like it did in V1?

                      Gary,

                      a5.close()

                      will close an application.

                        Gary,

Oddly, you mention a question *I* was going to ask here. I haven't yet tried to exit that application. It is left open and closed manually now. I would assume that the XBasic statement :a5.close() should suffice. I will try to close it and get back here with my results.

Yes, attaching the following script to your button will close Alpha5, as Jay has indicated:

                          :a5.close()

Remember to save changes, if any, before closing the application.
