Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Delete Problem Revisited

    I have marked certain records to be deleted, But when I issue:

    tbl.delete_range()

    all the records are deleted. Any ideas or suggestions?

    The delete_range() method takes a filter.
    t.delete_range("marked()=.t.")

    will delete the marked records from table t.

      RE: Delete Problem Revisited

      Peter:

      I'm still not getting what I want. My code is:

      usershort = "100"
      a_tbl = table.open( "c:labdbasenamebase.dbf" , FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE )
      a_tbl.fetch_first()

      WHILE .NOT. a_tbl.fetch_EOF()
      IF LEFT(a_tbl.Cnumber,3) usershort THEN
      a_tbl.change_begin()
      a_tbl.mark()
      a_tbl.change_end(.T.)
      END IF
      a_tbl.fetch_next()
      END WHILE

      a_tbl.delete_range("marked()=.t.")
      a_tbl.pack()
      a_tbl.close()

      When I run this code, I don't get 100% accuracy in the delete. I put a browse after the END WHILE, looked at the file, and I had marked correctly, but some records marked were not deleted, and some not marked are deleted.

      Any ideas or suggestions?

      You know, I put this loop together as a workaround because I couldn't get a variable in a range. All the example code for ranges show hard coded filters (no variables). For example:

      append.t_filter = "LEFT(XEUNUMBER,3)="100""

      I have a case where I need to create a table with all the transactions from a client. Each time through this code, it could be a different client. So, I can't hardcode the client code in the filter, I need to have a variable in the filter. Is that possible? I tried things like:

      usershort = "100"
      append.t_filter = "LEFT(XEUNUMBER,3)="+usershort

      Any ideas or suggestions about this?

        There have been several posts on this recently. You have to alternate single and double quotes to open and close them properly. I'll try as I remember it.

        append.t_filter = "LEFT(XEUNUMBER,3)=' "+usershort+" ' "
        There can be only one.

          RE: Delete Problem Revisited

          Concerning the inaccurate deletes, I'd consider closing the table after you've marked the delete candidates.

          then have your script open the table again and delete the range.

          Are you doing this in a multi-user environment? If so, you might consider opening the table in exclusive mode both for the marking and for the deleting.

            RE: Delete Problem Revisited

            If I understand your problem, you have a table from which you want
            to extract only those records pertaining to a specified customer.
            I had a similar problem in another context where I couldn't use a
            variable as a filter. With the help of Selwyn and Peter I created the
            following script, altered, I believe, to meet your situation.

            First declare cust as a global variable. Here is the code.

            Put this code on a button.

            cust=ui_get_text("Enter customer name") 'here you are prompted for the customer

            dim shared tbl as p
            dim query.options as c
            dim query.description as c
            dim query.order as c
            tbl=table.open("yourtable name")
            query.description = "Summary by Customer"
            query.order = "Customer" 'or whatever the fieldname where the cusomer name resides
            query.filter = "Customer='"+ cust +"'" ' note this construction is important
            query.options = ""
            ix = tbl.query_create()

            copy.db = "temp.dbf" 'this create atable called temp
            copy.set = ""
            copy.dd = .F. 'don't bother to copy the data dictionary
            copy.records = .T. 'yes, copy records
            copy.delete_o_dd = .T. 'including deleted records. you can make this false
            copy.fields = 3 'This specifies the number of fields to copy
            copy.field1 = "name" ' name of 1st field, etc
            copy.field2 = "month" ' if you have a lot of fields this can be onerous
            copy.field3 = "trips" ' however, you need to this once -also you only need
            tbl.copy() ' to copy the fields you need, not all of them
            file_add_to_db(copy.db) ' this actually adds the temp table to the database

            ix.drop() ' this drops the query
            'parent.show_all() I am not sure whether is necessay once the query
            ' is dropped.

            At this stage you should have a table (temp) containing the necessary records
            to do what you wish - reports etc. If not, let me know. There was another
            gimmick I used to do some further stuff.

            I hope this helps you in the right direction.

            Suggestion: when you download do any mods in your wp or notepad, before
            pasting it into Alpha. I find this easier at time than editing a script in
            Alpha.
