Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      At a command prompt, type:

      alpha5.exe -?

A nice little window will pop up and show you all the command-line options. Too bad you can't cut and paste from that window.

OK. Here goes - I hope the "Use HTML" works! The "Command Line Options" should show up below and you should be able to cut and paste them if you want them somewhere else:

        Command Line Options
        Syntax:
        alpha5 ".adb file" [-TITLE="title"] [-ICON-"icon"] [-SPLASH="splash"] [-NOSPLASH] [-INCLUDE="file"]
        Description:
To start Alpha Five, you can use the following command line options which let you change the window title, change the startup logo, and change the window icon:

        Option
        Description
        Example

        -TITLE="title>
Change the displayed title for the main Alpha Five window.
        TITLE="Customers"

        -SPLASH="bitmap"
Change the splash screen bitmap that displays when Alpha Five loads.
        -SPLASH=clock.bmp

        -ICON="icon"
Change the icon that displays on Alpha Five title bar.
        -ICON=logo.ico

        -NOSPLASH
Do not display a splash screen when Alpha Five loads.
        -NOSPLASH

        -COMMAND="xbasic"
Runs the specified Xbasic commands after Alpha Five starts.

        -INCLUDE="file"
When you have more command line options than can fit on one line, you can create an ascii file with the command line options in the file. Put one option per line. Use this option to specify the name of the ascii file.
        -INCLUDE=start.txt

        -NOMINMAX
Disable ability to minimize or maximize the Alpha Five main window.
        -NOMINMAX

        -NOSYSMENU
Open Alpha Five without a system menu on the main Alpha Five window.
        -NOSYSMENU

        -NOSIZE
Eliminate the size box for the A5 application
        -NOSIZE

        -MINIMIZE
        Start Alpha Five minimized.
        -MINIMIZE

        -MAXIMIZE
        Start Alpha Five maximized.
        -MAXIMIZE

        -HELP or -?
        Display the command line options.
        -HELP

        -A="application"
Runs an application (card stack). It starts the first (usually HOME) card - the user is not able to choose which card is first.) This is primarily for compatiblity with A5v1.
        -A=StackName

        NOTES:
        1. IMPORTANT: Do not leave any spaces between the option name and the '=' sign. E.g. -TITLE="Invoice", NOT -TITLE = "Invoice"
        2. Although you can start the line with just "alpha5", the system must be able to find the program. If the directory that contains the Alpha5.exe program is not included in the list of directories to be searched when starting a program, then you must include the full path name of the program. EX: c:\A5v4\alpha5.exe .....
        3. The default for the "-icon", "-splash", and "-include" options is the Alpha Five program directory. If any of these items are in another directory, they will also require the full path name.
        Example:
        c:\program files\runtime\alpha.exe c:\rms\rms.adb -nosplash -title="RMS Applications" -icon="c:\rms\data\rms.ico"

          Cal,

This format is one of the better educational tools I've seen. If A5 could utilize something like this to describe a line of Xbasic so, along with telling beginners not only what the line does, but what each part of the line is, that would be a big boost to many Xbasic novices like me.

Thanks for your efforts. I really do appreciate your time to do this.

Thanks for the credit but the basic layout of that is directly from the version 4.03 'readme.txt' file. I only added a couple other options I got from using the "alpha5.exe -?" commmand and a little bit of additional explanation at the end. So, most of the credit goes to Alpha!

So, the question is, can Alpha do it again with queries, postings, etc.?? I hope so. It will make my programing life a lot easier.
