Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Referential Integrity - Advise ?

    I just want to make sure that the setup of this Set is correct;

    (Parent) Invoice_Header
    (Child) Invoice_Items
    Parent Link = INVOICE_NO+CUST_ID
    Child Link = INVOICE_NO+CUST_ID
Link Type = One To Many
    Referential Integrity = Cascade

    (Child) Customer
    Parent Link = CUST_ID
    Child Link = CUST_ID
Link Type = One To One (First Match)
    Referential Integrity = Prevent

My concern is if the INVOICE_NO+CUST_ID Link could cause any problems?

Also is there any reason that when using expression Links like above, if the Fields in the Parent table and Child table are not in the same order in the table structures, trying to use Referential Integrity gives a error For integrity, use parent field name

    Thanks

    Comment:
Since an invoice number is unique, I don't see why you'd need to link on invoice number and customer id. Wouldn't invoice number alone yield a unique link. Also, referential integrity only works on single field links.

      Thanks Ohlen

The reason I am using the Customer Id also is that while entering Items in an Invoice it checks that it dose not exceed the Customers Credit limit, and prevents the user from entering the item line
Maybe I am wrong and there is a better way?

I taught that referential integrity only works on single field links, but in this set layout if I change the customer Id in the invoice header it changes all the attached Items to that customer, it least I think so, do I make any sense?
        Thanks

I have a field in my Invoice header CID, for the customer ID. You can then access the customer table with lookupn("C",CID,"Credit limit","Cust","CID") assuming cust.dbf is indexed on the CID field, and you have a credit limit field. I actually go one step deeper, by having a Job table - each customer may have multiple jobs. Some are contract, some time and material. I am able to warn people as they do data entry as to what type job they have (Contract jobs are red on white, T&M black on white) as they do data entry.

Main thing is it lets me link ONLY on invoice number. Very clean. Easy to fix- if the billing gets screwed up, and data is billed to the wrong job if I change the invoice number it automatically goes to the right job (and right customer) This happens as I use "previous" defaults to enter job and date info to speed up data entry. But when I find the error it is fast to fix.

            Thanks Steve

The problem is my client wants to be able to change the customer id in an invoice after entering item to it. He claims the girls make mistakes entering an invoice for the wrong customer
