Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    many-to-many and many-to-one

I'm switching from Approach to A5 and I've searched the board for many-to-many joins and many-to-one join options. I this possible in A5 like it is in Approach?

    RE: many-to-many and many-to-one

My Approach manual says, "You cannot set up a many-to-many relationship directly between two databases ... To set up a many-to-many relationship between two databases, you need to add an intermediate database. The other databases each have a one-to-many relationship with this database."

Yes, A5 can do the same.

My Approach manual also says, "Many-to-one relationships are often used as a lookup, to provide a convenient means of displaying data in a view. If you type a department ID on the employee form, the department name and location for that ID appear automatically."

A5 can handle it as a lookup through field rules or as a one-to-one link in a set. From the parent database in the set, such a one-to-one link will connect every record in the parent database to the department name and location record in the child database that matches the department ID when that is the linking field.

You're correct about the database in between. Good. That solves a big problem for me. I just read about the lookups in A5 last night so that answers my other questions.

Thanks alot for the quick response. I think I'm going to really like it here.

Not bad! What's it been? Less than 3 weeks sincy your first posting here? And, your already getting into the groove! I bet you're starting to see why I said I hated using Approach at work.

        Welcome to the club!

The best part I can see about A5 is the things I don't have to work around to get what I want. I operate a check by fax clearinghouse and the lookup and posting features are going to be an excellent fit for us. The other feature that I can't wait to use is the embedded browse. Our verification people are going to kiss me when they can see a browse and all the data for the record at the same time.

I'll be picking your brains again soon.
