Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Append when record changed

I have two identical databases (sorry tables)- shows my age - with a few fields , code , location and qty.
Tb1 holds the current live stock locations and when stock in a location is moved I change the location. If the code/location combination is depleted completely then the code/location is deleted. When stock is received a new record is created and I append this new record to the second table. I can do this OK - However

Tb2 is intended to show all stock locations past and present as we sometimes "lose" the stock and this helps to trace the location movements.

How can I append from tb1 to tb2 when I change an existing record in tb1

Depending on how you have things arranged you might want to consider a posting operation (or field rule) rather than an append.

      Arthur,
You can us a script to write the change to the second table and
place it on the onchange event for that field or table.

      Hope this helps

        RE: Append when record changed

I thought about this for awhile and realized that the big issue is that you only want to do it when the location is changed. There could be other changes but they would not require an entry into the 2nd table.

I think the easiest thing would be a button on your form which simply copies the current record into Tb2. Of course, this would have to be pressed BEFORE making the change if you want to store the OLD info. (There are ways to control this with Xbasic but I won't get into them unless you decide you need them.)

It could also be done automatically but would be a bit more intricate. You would need to store all the current fields (at least those that are needed in Tb2) in variables each time a record was opened. Then, after saving the record you would check the final location against the original. And, finally, if the final location is different than the original, use the variables to create a new record in Tb2.

Firstly thanks to all who replyed. The idea of a button on the form to copy the current record before any changes sounds fine. Although the main purpose is to copy any changes of location to tbl2 if any changes prompted a copy to tbl2 this would still be ok.

Could you advise me on how to create the Xbasic on the button to do this. Thanks again.

            RE: Append when record changed

I currently use the posting rules to append any new record to tbl2. I have a field called posted (Y/N) which defaults to N when a new record is added. I then copy all posted = N to tbl2 then update N to Y.

What I wanted was some method of copying any change of location on an existing record to tbl2. Cal has given me a method but I'd be pleased to get any help whatever.
