Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Access to edit a form

    I've created a form that stops the user from editing it but don't know how to get back in to edit it myself. I'm very new to A5 - used previous Dos versions - and am very unfamiliar with Xbasic. I believe a button with some coding will do the trick. Can someone help.

    Can you go to the control panel, select the form, and click on design? This would be the simplest way.

      If you haven't already used Bill's advice or can't. Open the code editor, interactive tab, type

      frm=form.view("the name of the form","SCRIPT_DISABLE_EXEC")

      you should then be able to switch to design mode and edit as you like.
      There can be only one.

        I wonder if Arthur isn't speaking about being able to edit the form once the app is distributed? At the customer site, for example. If so, Arthur, yould could use a "hot spot" or a key sequence with perhaps a password added.

        Arthur, To find out more about this try a search on the message bord for "Hotspots" or "Hot Spots". This should give you a fair amount of information. It would also be a good idea to use in in your design if you're to the point where you've created a menu and/or tool bar for the app. It could be a shorter way of getting to design mode that exiting the form and then going to design mode.

        Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

          RE: Access to edit a form

          Thanks for your responses. I work for Oxfam the Charity and I've used Alpha dos versions for many years and I'm trying to create the same applications I had in dos. With the dos applications I could stop the users from getting behind the scenes. We have a 5 user licence and intend to use this for our warehouse stock location system.

          I used info from someones form that changed the form properties "Menus/Toolbar properties". so that they could not minimise the form and get to the control panel. I provided an Exit button on the form.

          I need some method that lets me into control panel and or lets me edit the form. The Hotspot button sound good. I know how to create the button/hotspot but not the code.

          Appreciate any help.

            RE: Access to edit a form

            Here is some code that might help. On my main menu, I have this code in the onpush even of the "hidden" button:

            if chkpassword("exit")
            parentform.close()
            :controlpanel.show()
            :controlpanel.activate()
            else
            ui_msg_box("ERROR","Password was not correct. Access denied.")
            parentform:button2.activate()
            end if
            end

            where the chkpassword is a user defined function below:

            function chkpassword as L(pword as C)
            ' 06/01/98 Useage: if chkpassword("the password") then ...
            ' Password is not case sensitive. Returns .T. if password is correct, else .F.
            dim pwansr as C
            dim erransr as N
            retry_it:
            pwansr=ui_get_password("PASSWORD","Enter the password to continue..","*****","")
            pwansr=ut(pwansr)
            if pwansr="" ' cancel pressed
            chkpassword=.f.
            elseif pwansr=alltrim(pword)
            chkpassword=.t.
            else
            erransr=ui_msg_box("PASSWORD", "Sorry, your password was not correct.",21)
            if erransr=4
            goto retry_it
            end if
            chkpassword=.f.
            end if
            end function

            Good luck!
