Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Memo Field Xfer

I trying to append an Access table to and A5 table. All records Xfer just fine except the Access memo fields won't xfer to the A5 memo fields. Any suggstions? other than changing them to text & character fields?

Also, elementary question: What is the keystroke for highlighting and copying records in a browse so I don't have to hold the mouse at the bottom of the screen while it makes its way through 900+ records?

    Thanks,

    ken

Unfamiliar with access tables and their memo fields.

Don't think there is a "select all from current down" key combination, only know shift and down arrow will do the same as your mouse drag.

    Sorry.

      Hi Ken

Memo fields in A5 are kept in *.fpt. I've never appended the memo fields but I think if you do a seperate append from access just on the memo fields and append it to the *.fpt file it may work.

      Just a thought.

I believe you may have to work from within access to save as or export your table to foxpro 2.6. Then you can append without worrying about the file type issue.

          Bill,

I exported it as a Dbase 5 file. Everything Xfered in except the memo fields. I'll try it as a foxpro. I've done it b4 as a cahracter field with no problem. Just doesn't like memo fields.

Exporting to foxpro 2.6 and 3.o doesn't work either. Append only works in Access as an append query and it's tricky to name the databse outside of Access. Seems it wants an Access database instead. Will play around with it when I have more time tomorrow. If all else fails, I'll change the fields to text and character as I know that will work.

            thanks for the suggestions,

              Ken,

Forget about the append for a moment as additional complexites my be lurking there.

After converting from Access to Foxpro you should be able to add a table to an A5 database. Are you saying that when you do this, the memo field is not readable in A5?

                RE: Memo Field Xfer

                William,

Thanks for the tip. I've always done it via the append method and for some reason, it never dawned on me to do it your way. It worked great. A5 is reading it as a memo field. The moral of this story: When importing data from Access, don't do it via append but rather export it as a foxpro table and then open the foxpro table in A5.

                Thanks for your help.
