name of field with focus?

It seems too simple, but I can't seem to figure it out.
I want to use the tbl.fetch_loc_next() method and
specify the currently activated field as the only
field to search, whether it is a key field or not.

I am guessing that you will be running this script from a button?
And the problem is that the field that you want to do the search
on no longer has focus ....so how do you get the field name into
tbl.fetch_loc_next(matching expression, [field_name]). I am also
guessing that you will want to be able to do this using any field
in the table.

If these are the circumstances, I would suggest that you create 2
global variables, whos values will be set in the OnDepart event of
each field in the form.

The first variable will hold the fields value & the second will hold
the fields name. You may have to use the fld.type_get() method to convert
dates & numbers to strings.

Then on the button that you will use to do the tbl.fetch_loc_next()
plug in the variables for field value & field name, to search any
field in the table for a matching value.

You might also want to set the index to record number, given that most
of the fields will not be key fields.

Maybe someone else has a better way of skinning this cat?

Tom: You can find the active field in a form (or browse) with the .active() method. If you have 2 forms, Test and Test2. Put a field and an an embedded browse on Test and then put a button on test1 with the following code, you'll see how it works.

The one thing to be careful of is that this returns the field object name rather than the field table name so if you have changed the object names ....

Aw..man, do I feel dumb. I skipped right over Chapter 12 entirely. Thanks for the excellent pointer() :) It's even listed in the Xbasic explorer.
