Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    count this

    sorry about the blank post

    count this

let me take a simpler approach

referance p379 ofa5 xbaxic ref manual

    ex: count(inv_item->amount, grp->invoice,grp->inv_item)

this counts the # of inv items for a specific invoice
can i count just those amounts over 10.00 for the specific invoice??

    if so , how?

    thank you

    RE: count this

    Hi John.

Think what you need to use is total() not count.

    total(inv_item->amount=10)

I believe that should do it.

        RE: count this

what i want to know is how many records/items for inv 1102 have
        amounts more than 10.00

        the answer s/b 2 records/items

i don't want to know the total of the 2 records that exceed 10.00
        which will be 98.50

        thank you

          RE: count this

I thought total() would do that the first time I used it but alas it doesnt. I have a form that calculates how many times a person gives the answer 1 or 2. I tell it

total(answer1_2=2) and it gives me the total number of answers that are two iwithin a week month or year. So if in a week a person answers "2" 5 times it will total the number of times "2" is used and give me the answer 5. Try it. It can only hurt your feelings :0)

            Jamin, John
I am interested in the same thing. I need to COUNT the number of time a pewrson has purchased a widge over the past year. I haven't even tried it yet but my first instinct is to use "count". I want the number of occurance. Does "Total" do that?

              RE: count this

If you can't use what they suggest for total() or it doesn't work try defining a calculated field ov10count defined as if(inv_item->amount>=10,1,0) and then total that calculated field as suggested.

Haven't tested this but I use something similar.
              There can be only one.

                RE: count this

The only way to do this without a query is to have a calculated expression on a form or report.
Say calc expression called 10plus as if(Amt>10,1,0)
then total(Calc->10plus,Grp->Invoice) should give the number.
If you want to vary the greater than amt, and be able to have the user set the level you would use a variable say VAMT
and then 10plus expression is if(Amt>Var->VAMT,1,0)
You would have to refresh the form every time you changed VAMT.
If you have a lot of calculated expressions the screen draw can be very slow. If you KNOW what you need you can create actual fields in the table so the data is precalculated.

Play around, it CAN be done.

If I understand what your saying yes it would.

                  total(item_table="widge")

This will look in the item table and total the number of times widge is used. If your doing it per person than you will have to run a query. I am attatching something I am working on. Down load and check the contents of the second tab on the Main form. THe little boxes at the bottom are calc fields and use total.
