Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    From full version to runtime

I have an application prepared using the full version of A5V4.

Eventually I will install the application on a NT Network with 7 users. I intend to use the Runtime version for the user stations.

I would install the application with the runtime version and keep all tables on the network server which will have the full version.

Am I going the right direction ?
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for your assistance

    J.P.

RE: From full version to runtime

    Hi J-P:

That sounds fine. But the server does not have to have a copy of A5 installed. I don't see how it could hurt, and it might be convenient, but it is not necessary.

You don't indicate that you will "Network Optimize" the runtime based machines. This would speed up your runtime users' performance immensely.

Thanks for your reply Stan, I may look ignorant , but what is "runtime optimizing?"

          Thanks Bill,

But I tought I need a full version on the server to make changes to the application if needed. Am I right?

            Hi J-P,

Correct. You do need a full version to edit your application. I only meant to indicate that the full version does not have to be on the server. It could just as well be on a client if convenient. You can have both the runtime and a full version on one or more of the clients which is what I do. The machine in my office has both; the other clients each have a runtime; the server has only the application.

Network optimize places a shodow database on the client machines. The effect is that forms and other program elements don't have to move across the network which speeds things up. It makes a big difference (depending on network speed, of course--the slower the network the bigger the difference).

Good luck with your conversion project. The advise your getting seems fine. I would just add that if your a somewhat new user, and it sounds like this is the case, you might find it helpful to do your editing with the full version on a workstation and not the server as you're less likely to run into path issues. Secondly, I suggest you don't take up space on the server if you don't have to. The only time I ever installed the full version on the server was when I had some really heavy math calculations in a dozen reports that literally took two-four minutes to pull over the network and under fifteen seconds to work with at the server. If you have the full version, let me suggest that you go to online documentation and use file find to locate key words like network optimization. Once again, good luck.

If you don't feel that you have a clear enough understanding of the benefits or features (provided by other responses) of the Network Optimization function in Alpha, I will be happy to email you a description of the time it has saved at my company.
