Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Trouble opening a form

I've created a new set in an exisiting database which is being used by multiple users on a network. When any user other then myself attempts to open the form associated with the new set they get an error message that states that the set cannot be found. All forms associated with the indivudal tables which make up this set can be opened, changed, or otherwise modified. Plus other set forms in this same database can be opened without problem.

We are running on Windows NT and I have confirmed that all permissions have been set correctly.

Help!!!! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Take a look at your tables/sets tab on the control panel and make sure when you saved the set that you didn't save it in your c:program filesa5v4 directory. I've done this several times by accident and had to "Save as" in the networked directory to make it available to all users.

Checked it and re-saved. It still can't find it. Is there someplace that I can look to see where the form is trying to open from. I've moved the entire folder where all the files live to one of the users harddrive and it still can't locate the set even when all of the path information on the Table/Set tab has repointed to the new location.

        RE: Trouble opening a form

First I am assuming that you have one machine connected to the "network path" files. This would be the machine on which you design and maintain the application. The other users are running "optimized" (shadow) copies of the application.

Now, if you go to the machine where the development is done and look in the control panel, is the path to your new set the same as the network path? If not yu need to save as and specify the same path as the other files. Having done this the other users will need to re-optimized their local copies. Refreshing will only bring in new forms, etc., it will not bring in newly added tables and sets.

Hope this is the answer you need.

I've tried to optimize from one of my user's machine and when he tried to open the form after optimization, it can't find the set in the shadow directory either.

This is one of the stranges things I've every seen. Under the Table/Set tab all files show the correct network path. You can open any of the tables from any of my user location except the one set. Three other sets in this directory work perfectly. It appears that it doesn't matter where I put the files it still can't find the set from either the Table/Sets tab or the Forms tab. Only the forms tab all the correct forms are listed.

Ihave totally deleted the set and rebuilt it using a different name (on the change that it may have been corrupted. Still get the same indications. I don't know any more to tell you.

          Thanks for your replies.

Here's a little more info. I recreated the set on one of my user machines and saved it as the original file name. Everything worked on his machine but then I can not access the set from my machine. I've also noticed that the primary table for this set does not have a .CDX file while every other table has one. Don't remember whats in the CDX file but it may be an indication of the problem. What do you think.

The .cdx is the table index file. Still can't figure why you're having this problem.

Thanks. I did create an index but it still didn't help. This is most confusing. I'll keep playing with it and maybe I'll find something.

                Thanks again
