I was over trying to help Dave Jones today and was unsuccessful. Dave has posted his problem a couple times on this board but is still having trouble.(see subjects: 'Selwyn Alpha 5 crashes on network' and 'Alpha 5 - network crash')
We think there might be a problem between the video board and the network. The program works fine when he runs it on his local computer. When he runs it on the network (shadowed or not) it runs fine UNTIL he exits - then the system locks up and he has to give it the three finger salute.
If he starts Windows98 in the safe mode, it runs OK. So, today we took every startup program out of his StartUp folder, win.ini file, and registry 'run' and 'runservices' lines. The only thing we left was the network programs. Then we disabled the video acceleration and disk read-ahead optimization but the problem still occurred.
His network is Novell (3.11?) and the video board/driver is ATI Mach64 Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2x.
His next plan is to bring in another Novell expert to see if he can find something his local IT person missed. If that doesn't work, he may have to scrap a year of A5 work and switch to Access - as it stands, his A5 app. does everything he wants but is useless without the network. FYI, ANY A5 app including the sample apps will cause the problem - its not something he did in his application.
Is there a way to 'disable' his video board and run with plain SVGA? I'd swear there is but can't remember how to do it. I wanted to try this to confirm if it was video related.
Any chance there is a way to determine what memory locations were being accessed at the time of the failure? If so, could we protect those memory locations like we used to do when using himem in DOS?
Anyone have any other ideas? I hate to lose an otherwise happy A5 user to Access. (Besides, he's already tried Access and he's not looking forward to using it but may not have an alternative.)
