Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Data Entry Shortcuts?? Where?

    Data Entry Shortcuts?? Where?

It used to be that you could save oodles of key strokes entering records with many common fields by either entering
Ctrl-F for entering the field from the previous field location or Ctrl-R to enter the complete record from the last record entered and then change just the one or two fields that were differnt.
I no longer see those optiosn in Alpha 5, 4 and wonder if they have just changed key strokes or something. Surely they weren't just done away with. They were one of the good things about using Alpha over the others. Hopefully someone can enlighten me about how to get these data entry shortcuts working again. Thanks!

Use control-shift-R to copy the last record. I don't know what you use for copying the previous field. They haven't made it easy to do anything. ACCESS has it all over Alpha in using intuitive key strokes for ease of copying fields, copying records, find and locates. It's like using a lookup field. Used to be you hit a function key after you typed in the first few letters. Now you have to hit the arrow button. Pain in the butt if you're using high screen resolutions.

Check out the message titled "User Manual/Help Errer". It has a pretty complete list of available hot keys. (The one you want is Ctrl-Shift-F.)

Here's another hint for those of you who like shortcuts.

I use a Gateway Anykey+ keyboard which has (1) a second set of function keys and (2) built-in ability to reprogram any key on the keyboard with EXTREME ease.

      Some examples:
      - I program certain passwords into the function keys and take my keyboard with me on customer calls. This way I can access my special features without worrying about somebody watching what I type to find the password.
      - When writing scripts I reprogram a key to handle any operation that I expect to repeat more than 4-5 times. One common usage is for editing lists or copy operations - go to the end of a line and delete the last xx words or characters, or delete everything from the cursor to the end of the line but DON'T delete the quote mark at the end of the line. (I know, it sounds petty. But, when it's so easy, why not?)
      - I have my A5 message board log-in saved as the Ctrl-F5 key.
      - I have a number of HTML commands saved. For example, you may note that I usually have two spaces between sentences in my messages. This is because I have the HTML "non-breaking space" character as Ctrl-N. I can also create backslashes by typing Ctrl-\ instead of the five characters "& # 9 2 ;"

One very unfortunate thing - Gateway doesn't make this keyboard any more so you will have to find a used one. Personally, I like it so much I found a used one an bought it as a spare.

One slick feature somebody in this board helped me with is that you can use buttons to do hot-key like actions.

I have a button called simply enought "Print Report". The "P" in print shows onscreen as being underlined, which shows that it can be activated manually without a mouse. By pressing ctrl-alt-p I activate the button instead of having to use the mouse to activate it.
