Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    What's new with Alphaa?

I came across the following item and feel left out!

"Many of you may have already received an e-mail telling you of Selwyn Rabins repurchasing Alpha Software back into his hands."

Is this true? What are the implications? I've been trying to learn Access without success. I love alpha4 and want to learn Alpha5 but want to be sure it will be around for awhile. Since I've experienced abondonement with Alpha4 I don't want to be abondoned if I learn Alpha5. Couldn't biill (you know who) eliminate Alpha5 on a whim? I hear Alpha4 won't work much longer since bill (small b)plans to eliminate DOS!

What's a database developer wannabe suppose to do. I'd like to get as efficient in designing in a windows environment as I was in dos with A4.

What's up and what can I look forward to.

    Tom,

I've used Access for the last 5 years. Have had A4 for some time and switched to A5v4 a bit ago. A5 is in it for the long run. A new version A5v5 will be out sometime early summer with lots of exciting enhancements. There have been several patches, for bugs and minor enhancements, to A5v4.

Best adivce is to get A5v4, you've got 30 days to try it out and return (not sure of the length of time). This message board is outstanding. Soon you'll be leaving Access in the dust, cough, cough. Too much dust.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      RE: What's new with Alphaa?

Well, I've been an A4 die-hard (I'll never switch to Alpha Five, I'll never do it) for quite some time. After buying A5-v4 and just toying with it, we'll, let's just say that there will be a day in the not so distant future that I no longer use Alpha Four/dos. So if Billy boy wants to do something to make it impossible to run dos programs on future versions of windows, bring it on! Because, well, A5-V4 is here and A5-V5 is coming.

Keep an eye on these boards too. Selwyn has said that he's re-aquired Alphasoftware. You will see him in here every day and he's dedicated to making the best database product on the market and helping the user with problems encountered.

As far a Bill (you know who) eliminating A5 on a whim...he's not god, he can't just say "Begone with Alpha Five!" However, if he saw A5 as a threat to Access, there's nothing stopping him from trying to purchase Alphasoftware or Alpha Five from AlphaSoftware to bury it and if the owners of AlphaSoftware thought that the price was right, they'd have every right to sell it. But this is America, those things happen and until it does, A4 now and A5 coming soon are my database products of choice, nothing else.

I think Selwyn and AlphaSoftware are in this for the long haul. Send him an email and ask him yourself. I'm sure he'll tell you.

      Mike

      Thank you,
      Mike Konoff
