Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Five and EDI

Has anyone used Alpha Five to generate and translate EDI doucments. We are in the process of researching EDI of use with one of our customers. I would like to be able to build this feature into the application that I am building. I am sure that it can be done and that someone has done this but I need some direction in which to go. Where can I get the infomration to translate the EDI codes. I can get the doument type and number from our customer but I then would need the information to implement this into the app.

Or would it be better to use a commerical software to do this.

    Thank You

    rodney...

a couple of years ago I used xbasic to write table data
into a text file that would import directly into an EDI
    software package.

It was quite a bit of work to get the text into the proper
format for importing. At the time I was using Alpha5 V1.1
so I'm sure that it is possible to do this in V4.03. I
don't know if I have a copy of the script, if I can find
it I will email it to you, It may give you some ideas for
writing the script that you will need.

      RE: Alpha Five and EDI

Is this a medical or commercial EDI? I do extensive medical EDI.
There are 2 systems for medical EDI: the NSF format and the
ANSI 837 format. HCFA has mandated a switch to the ANSI formatby 20002, so if you're starting fresh you should code for ANSI - assuming
your local carriers support it (in NY the local Medicare carrier
still doesn't support it, so I'm using NSF). Essentially what yyou do is to take your billing data and write it out in text files that
match the EDI format. The EDI formats are always all text formats.

There's an old article on learn alpha.com about "reading a bubble form" that discusses many of the issues involved in EDI.

        RE: Alpha Five and EDI

        rodney,

I found the script, it uses version 1.1 xbasic syntax but
should give you some ideas on what xbasic you will need.

This client had some special circumstances for billing
invoices through EDI. They wanted 3 invoices per EDI
transaction, I don't remember all the particulars about
this, but at least it will give you something to look at!

          RE: Alpha Five and EDI

Thanks all for repyling. The use of the EDI will be commerical.

The doucments that will be used are 210, 214, and 204.

The are for invoice, Ship Status, and load tender. This are used in the trucking industry. Will I need to use a commerical EDI system and then convert the outcome into a readable from for Alpha Five?

This may be the way to do it.

          Anymore suggestions would be welcome.

            RE: Alpha Five and EDI

            rodney,

The EDI software that I worked with had the ascii format requirments for importing
a flatfile into the EDI package. If you use the EDI software for data entry, &
it has an export function... it would probably be easier to import the data
from an EDI export into Alpha. I went the other way because I could make the data
entry much easier & faster in Alpha5. The EDI package that the client used
was a DOS application, data entry was slow & confusing to the client.

I also remember that the clearing house had an import / export utility that
would map fields into or out of EDI, but I think they wanted clost to $3000.00
            for it...

            Good luck rodney!!

              RE: Alpha Five and EDI

You need to get a set of file definitions from your client of their business partner wanting to do EDI with them. The numbers you mentioned are standard protocols, but I don't have that info any more. All they need to do is send you a copy, and it will probably be free. The other alternative is to find a definition in a library and do a lot of copying.
