Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How many versions can I jump from A5V4?

I want to upgrade. I am using version 4. I've searched the faq and the board to no avail.
What is the upgrade path for me?
    Thanks,
    Tom C

Tom, I see no big rush of folks anxious to tackle your question, so let me hazard a few opinions, while inviting others to contribute their two cents, also.

    1) For desktop applications the big jump was from A5v4 to A5v5. Suggest you peruse the A5v5 forum for threads dealing with compatibility issues. Look for threads that contain words like "A5v5 differences" "version 5 differences", and the like. I remember a very good post by Peter Wayne that summarized the differences that could cause problems moving to v5 from v4. So, check for threads from him as well.

    2) The key thing that I remember is that the syntax for arrays changed. Parentheses are illegal now. You have to use square brackets. This requires a bit of re-coding if you use arrays in your scripts.

    3) Alpha Software made a good attempt at assuring compatibility, however action scripting has been completely re-written (for the better) using an entirely new interface and vocabulary. In other cases you'll find the list of reserved words had gotten a bit longer. If you unfortunately selected one of these as the name for an object in your applications you'll hit a snag.

For desktop apps moving from A5v5 to A5v7 was much less of a stretch.

A5v5 and A5v6 have not been upgraded or patched in a long long time. They may never be. If I were you I'd jump right to vers 7.

      Go for it

Like Tom, go ahead and get v.7 Don't let those alphie's tell you there is a big learning curve, Of course there is, but you won't regret it. If you buy ver 5, then 6, then 7 and by the time you get ver 7, ver 8 will probably be out and you will have alot of money invested, so go for the big one. You won't believe the things you can do. With AS it almost programs itself.

      Good luck,

      Jerry

btw, I have ver 6, and ain't going any higher, getting ready to retire and my wife wants to travel so ain't going to have time to do this much longer.

Well! It's 5 years later and I have 10.5 and still going. Look's like I am not going to retire anytime soon. This is now a hobby for me and it's a good stimulate for the brain. Seems like I find something new everyday to create in A5. Working on a new app for the company I work for.
