Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    copy a function

    Hi All,

This is elementary but how do I copy a function from 1 DBF to another?

    I'm all eyes and ears,

I ask this because when I go into CP/code/new/function the open space for the code will not accept the keyboard.

      Ed,

Global UDF's are stored in the code tab of the control panel. They're available to any DBF in your database. They do not need to be copied to another DBF.

If I needed to move a UDF from one database to another I'd:

      1) open the function in design mode; select all; copy to clipboard
      2) close database
      3) open new database
      4) select code tab; right click white space; choose New; choose function
      5) furnish name, return type and specify necessary arguments
      6) click ok
      7) when the code editor opens, paste the function in from the clipboard, and then strip off the duplicate function, end function calls.

There may be a more elegant approach but this works for me.

As you point out, that works, but is a bit inelegant. I have a utility that will copy functions, scripts, menus, toolbars, and other elements from one database to another. Unfortunately, it was designed to run in A5V5 or newer and will not run in A5V4, although it will copy elements from one A5V4 database to another.

In V6, the function can be exported and them imported using the built in actions. Just another reason to update.

That is a different problem. If you can't type in the code editor, I suspect a problem with available resources. If you are running Win98 or WinME, that is a common problem as neither do a good job of resource allocation. As the resources dwindle, various problems may occur. I had one computer where the tab key quit. On another, the code editor wouldn't even open. The solution is usually fairly easy. Just reboot and verify that there are very few programs opening on startup.

            Jerry,

            This machine is a 2.6 Gb, 512M, running XP..SP2.

When I stated above that it would not receive input from the keyboard, what I really meant that a cursor was not blinking in the input window therefor it would never receive any input.
            Thank you,
            Ed

              Jerry,

In this case the user doesn't feel as though it is necessary to upgrade to V5 so I guess your approach will not help in this case.

              Thank you,

                Hi Tom,

I thought I did exactly as you spelled out several times. The problem being when the window opens to paste the code, there is no cursor blinking. I still clicked in the window but no soap.
I'll try once more to verify.

                Thank you,
                Ed

                  Hi Tom & Jerry,

The old adage of try and try again proved itself worthy once more. I tried several times (I suspect brute force) but Tom's approach worked well.

                  Thanks again,
                  Ed
