Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Installation woes

    Greetings all...

    My old HD DIED!!
Lucky I made backups of apps on cds. :)
I installed a new hard drive and installed WINXP PRO
instead of 98. When I tried to install A5v4 I got the
    following message...........

    ---------------------------
    16 bit Windows Subsystem
    ---------------------------
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
    ---------------------------
    Close Ignore

I ran a search, it seems no one has had this problem before.

All of my other programs run just fine on XP PRO and have
encountered zero problems, so I have never ran into this
before. I never had a problem with 98 and A5, so is this
an XP thing? I chose CLOSE the first time and nothing
happened so I chose IGNORE the second and again nothing.

I am logged on as Administrator, so I should have access to full system. I'm stumped.

What must I do to get up and running again?

I send my thanks in advance and patiently await...like
    I have a choice. :P

    *BUMP*

    Anyone??

I have emailed Alpha support and this is the response I get...(and I quote)

"We no longer make Alpha Five v4 available.

You may upgrade to one of the following. Your data can be read, and will be upgraded by both:

Please note: To receive the pricing below you must order by phone. I provide the links so that you may review more information on these products. If you order directly online, you will pay FULL PRICE.

    $ 79 Alpha Five Home Edition http://www.alphasoftware.com/shop/itemdesc.asp?PRODID=87

$239 Alpha Five Version 6 Single User License http://www.alphasoftware.com/shop/itemdesc.asp?PRODID=103"

I dont want a new version, I have too many apps that my customers are completely happy with, including me.

How's this for the latest error message...
"You must use windows version 3.1 or higher to install this product..."

    Duh! You think?

Sorry guys this is really frustrating, any help would be fantastic.

      RE: Installation woes

      Dwayne,

I am surprised you had this response from Alpha; A5v4 has been sold by them as compatible with XP. I run it on XP, originally on 98. I think it runs well on XP, possibly better than 98. Did you install from the original intallation file (inputting the reg code, etc.) or try to do it by copying the contents of the A5V4 directory? I don't think the latter will work.

Hope you get a more helpful response from Alpha soon...

        RE: Installation woes

        Hi Martin,

Yes I did a complete install from the original disks, no copying involved.

And yes I also was surprised by Alpha's response, they have always been very supportive of their customers. Frankly, I was shocked at the email I received from them.
There have been numerous emails to me directly from people on this forum and they have expressed the same response as you.

However, on a good note a reinstall of XP and sp2 fixed the problem, and everything is running fine. I want to thank everyone who emailed their ideas and findings to me. You guys and girls are a blessing. You know who you are. Between the various emails we narrowed it down to a few problem files.

        Thanks all.

          RE: Installation woes

When was A5V4 released? Wasn't it about 10 years ago? I've been surprised that they haven't announced that support for legacy apps wouldn't be available any longer.

If you plan to continue using A5v4 I'd recommend you upgrade to 4.5 at least. (Assuming you can still purchase it.)

            RE: Installation woes

            LOL

Yes Tom it was about 10 years ago.

But its hard to let go of a product that still works just
fine. Although I worry about if I work as well as it does.
But I've been thinking about upgrading to the latest and
the greatest, but cannot talk myself into it just yet
(when I'm happy with what I have).

Anyone else have that problem? With say.......
            A reliable vehicle?
            A good pair of shoes?
            Old Levi's
            Favorite hat
            Old computer game (pong)
            Faithful pet
            Alpha 4?

Call me old fashioned I guess, but its hard to put it on
the shelf when its been so...........so good.

            :)

            Thanks,
            Dwayne

              Dwayne,

If you upgraded to V6 you would be very pleasantly surprised at the changes in Action Scripting, especially. They reworked it completely for V5 and have extended it further in V6. You can get an amazing amount of work done without dropping back to xbasic.
