Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated Field on Layout

    Guys: I need help on this after numerous searches and my own feble attempts and what I've settled on is not pretty.

    Trying to get the layout to look decent.

    if(Constnts-"ac1c=0,"","How Many______"+trim(Constnts-"Act1)+" @ "+str(Constnts-"Ac1c,5,2)) [one line for al of this of course]

    Above evaluates to 'How Many_______Golf @ 15.00'but doesn't line up as you would want.

    20 character fields each with these values

    Dinner
    Golf
    Cruise
    Breakfast

    These fields are formated N - 7 total 2 decimels
    with these values

    20.00
    15.00
    10.00
    5.00

    How can I pad(), stuff(), or whatever to have the layout look like this. I'm laying these
    calc-fields on a RTF so they'll shrink if empty

    How Many______Dinner........20.00
    How Many______Golf..........15.00
    How Many______Cruise........10.00
    How Many______Breakfast.... 5.00

    Is this possible without writing an expression that reaches
    from Chicago to the East Coast?

    Thanks in advance

    Ken

    Geeez - I can't even get the question to line up. The goal, as you would expect is to get the dollars into a decent column.

      Something like?

      if(Constnts-"ac1c=0,"","How Many______"+trim(Constnts-"Act1)+" @ "+padl(alltrim(str(Constnts-"Ac1c,5,2)),35-len("How Many______"+trim(Constnts-"Act1)+" @ "),"."))

      vary the "35" in

      35-len("How Many______"+trim(Constnts-"Act1)+" @ ")

      to suit.
      There can be only one.

        Stan:

        Experimented with the #35 going down incrementally from to 20 and up to 40, one at a time and really don't understand the syntax, just yet.

        Here's jpg of a test preview.

        Thanks

            RE: Calculated Field on Layout

            Ken,

            I was using the interactive editor and removed the "constnts-"" and assigned values to the remainder, as if they were variables and got

            ac1c = 1
            act1 = "golf"
            ? if(ac1c=0,"","How Many______"+trim(Act1)+" @ "+padl(alltrim(str(Ac1c,5,2)),35-len("How Many______"+trim(Act1)+" @ "),"."))
            = "How Many______golf @ ..........1.00"

            act1="breakfast"
            ? if(ac1c=0,"","How Many______"+trim(Act1)+" @ "+padl(alltrim(str(Ac1c,5,2)),35-len("How Many______"+trim(Act1)+" @ "),"."))
            = "How Many______breakfast @ .....1.00"

            act1="dinner"

            ? if(ac1c=0,"","How Many______"+trim(Act1)+" @ "+padl(alltrim(str(Ac1c,5,2)),35-len("How Many______"+trim(Act1)+" @ "),"."))
            = "How Many______dinner @ ........1.00"

            act1 = "cruise"
            ? if(ac1c=0,"","How Many______"+trim(Act1)+" @ "+padl(alltrim(str(Ac1c,5,2)),35-len("How Many______"+trim(Act1)+" @ "),"."))
            = "How Many______cruise @ ........1.00"

            which seems to make them line up correctly.

            The expression pads to the left with "." the trimmed string held in "Act1" to the length of 35 minus the length of the preface string ""How Many______"+trim(Act1)+" @ ".

            The 35 is just to allow for the longest possible value for the preface
            "How Many______breakfast @ "

            I think.
            There can be only one.

              That's incredible

              I think that I need to fool around in the interactive to see what's happenin'- more - before asking for help.

              Thanks so much for the help.

                One more time....... FIXED FONTS ! I know that you knew... but I didn't think of it.... You can't do dependable space or character number manipulation with PROPORTIONALS - gotta be fixed.

                Remember back in A4DOS ALL fonts were 'fixed' and this wouldn't have been a problem.

                Your expressons work perfectly and the numbers line up like piano keys - use a proportional font and they 'snake'.

                Thanks again for the lessons.
