Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    2 year old app went south

    Hi Forum,

    Attached is an app that has been running without fault for over 2 years. Albeit this part had never been tried. In the app there is a form to fill in some variables to be used later in a data entry form. Also, in the next form where the variables will be used is a button to go back to the variables to change them if necessary.

    The problem is that when you click on a variable to change it, it will automatically exit the variable form and go to the data entry form.

    To see what is happening, click on Post//Edit Entries, click Enter Edit Dues // click Enter Dues Now // click Change Defaults Now. Then click on any variable and it will immediately go to the data entry form without giving a chance to enter a value.

    Open to all ideas,
    efs

    This may solve the problem.

    This is the action script to open the next form

    if is_object("duesentry") then
    duesentry.show()
    duesentry.activate()
    else
    :Form.view("duesentry")
    end if

    What can I add to this to close the form (defaults_dialog) that this button is on ?

      Ed,
      I tried to help but gave up. Your directions didn't tell me which database to open. There are multiple databases in your zip file. Your directions didn't tell me which form to open either. How about furnishing step by step, mouse click by mouse click, instructions so that we don't have to work through the dozens of choices here one by one?

        Ed,

        You have to tell us how to get to the control panel in any database that autoloads a startup form.

          RE: 2 year old app went south

          Hi Tom thanks for your interest,

          1. Start by opening the form "mainmenu"
          2. Click "Post/Edit Entries"
          3. Click "Enter/Edit Dues"
          4. Type in any dates in the first 3 fields
          5. Enter any numerical value in the 4th field, like 5.
          6. Click "Enter Dues Now"
          7. After you enter the variables in several parents, assume that you now run across a parent record where the values are different from the norm and click, so you click "Change Defaults"
          8. Click on whatever variable you want to change, here is where it goes into the dues enter form immediately and disallows changing the variable.

          The idea is to be able to change 1 or more variables and then click "Change Defaults" and enter these new values into the dues table for the parent (members).

          I suspect that I have not closed the variable entry form could be the problem. I am not sure where to enter the close form in the action script that opens the next form, before code to enter the succeding form or at the bottom of the action script.

          The action script toproceed to the dues entry is as follows:

          if is_object("duesentry") then
          duesentry.show()
          duesentry.activate()
          else
          :Form.view("duesentry")
          end if

          I deeply appreciate your interest and help,
          ED

            Ed, thanks.

            Which database?

            Did you look at the files you posted? There are multiple databases there.

            If the database autoloads a startup form, how do we get to the control panel?

              Hi Tom,

              Click on the background just to the left of where it says "Local 1820 Main Menu" then type in schultzie.
              That should allow you to click on "Form" and then "design".

                Ed,

                Using

                Database_for_menu_dummy

                Button1 on Defaults_dialog form opens two copies of the Duesentry form. The OnDepart event opens 1; the OnPush opens the second. Suggest you delete the OnDepart event script and let us know whether the problem goes away.

                  Hi Tom,

                  I just remembered that I have "controlpanel.hide()" edited out on the startup form.

                    Hi Tom,

                    Thank you, what a stupid mistake, it works exactly as designed.

                    Many thanks again,
