Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Moving focus to a variable - A5 V4

We have a user inputted variable that we scan barcodes into. We then force the barcode entry to run a script, which searches against various tables to populate other tables. Funny thing is, we cannot get the cursor back into the original field automatically without us pressing Enter.
At the moment we are running the script by attaching it to a button which is next in the tab order. The script runs but the focus remains on that button.
We are running the script 'onarrive'....we want it to then go back to the original field so it is re-set automatically and ready to accept another scan.

    Thanks

Make the final line of your script

    objectname.activate()

where objectname is the object name of the variable on the form.
    There can be only one.

      FAO:STAN MATHEWS - Moving focus to a variable - A5 V4

      Hi Stan

Thankyou for your reply to my post, however it seemed to come through on my e-mail but not on this forum screen so hopefully you will get this message
I have tried the object.activate() line in my script already but the button still seems to hold focus. If you press return the button highlights but just stays there. We have also tried adding an activate command to the button through actions.

      Thanks

      Fiona

Sorry, I was just having a bit of sport making the point that your pale blue text on blue background was hard to read. I used an even paler yellow for mine.

Drag-select the text immdiately below to read it.

        This is very pale yellow.

        Back to normal black.

I'm confused about what triggers the search script. At one place you mention a button and at another you mention onarrive. Try the onchange event for the variable on the form.
        There can be only one.

          Fiona,

So are you saying the button has both an OnPush event script and an OnArrive event script, and that you've attached the script in question to the OnArrive event for the button? Is there any reason you can't attach it to the OnPush event?

            Re: Moving focus to a variable - A5 V4

            Ok, gotcha! Sorry

We have a variable called scan and we scan a barcode into this, what we really want is for the act of scanning the barcode to run a script which searches against a table and populates other tables. We have succeeded at that.

However, what we want is the act of scanning to do the above but then clear the variable and put the cursor back in the blank variable on screen, ready to accept another scan.

I tried adding the script to the variable on change and the script works but again the focus is still on the button which is next in the tab order. We dont need the button however that is the only way we can make the system work at the minute. We scan the barcode (which is followed by a carriage return) the focus moves to the button, the Find script runs and populates other fields however to move the focus from the button to the scan variable we have to press return or press down.

We have tried adding commands to the end of our script such as scan.activate() but the focus is still left on the button.

            Thanks

            Fiona

              Did you solve this problem?
I am doing the same thing in v9. One writable field on a form, taking data from a barcode scanner. OnChange has erratic results, presumably because the field can only lose focus to itself. Put in a dummy field so focus can move away from the input field, with an "OnArrive" moving focus back. Can't get this to work (the field is a variable as in your situation).

                Hi

Sorry for the late reply to your message.

No, we didnt have any luck with this and gave up for a while after trying so many different things!

Did you get anywhere in the end?

                Thank you
