Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Failed to Update System Registry

I recently updated the operating systems that Pro Maintainer 2000 is running on WIN9x to XP Pro. I am receiving the same error BELOW on all systems (main File Server & all workstations).

...You press OK and then all appears OK.

This appears to be a permissions issue, as when I run the same program with local system admin rights the error does not occur. Giving the users admin rights is NOT an option. I need to know where and what is written to the registry so I can repair this problem.

    The error reads:

    Alpha Five 4.0
Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT."

    *******end of Email

What should I do? Or should I leave it. We are upgrading this app to Alpha5, version 5.0 so I hope that version 5.0 can handle XP Pro.

RE: Failed to Update System Registry

Here's an explanation from the A5v5 board - see the posting from Lenny:

Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be an option in A5v4.

RE: Failed to Update System Registry

Sorry, that should have been "see the posting from Aaron."

RE: Failed to Update System Registry

Bottomline, then there is nothing I can do to help them?

Just click OK at the error message & carry on? Once again, I assume that will not create any problems.

RE: Failed to Update System Registry

Not as far as I know - but just remember how much you paid for that advice!

Also, as far as I know, there is no problem created. They just may not be able to click an adb file to start A5 - but then, I don't allow my customers to do that anyway and it sounds like you don't either. (They might be able to start it that way if the original installation of A5 was installed by an administrator and it set the registry at that time.)

RE: Failed to Update System Registry

Is the SAME problem liable to happen using Alpha5 version 5.0? Just curious.

RE: Failed to Update System Registry

If you review the link posted by Cal above, Aaron explains how to resolve this problem in V5. So no, you should not have the same problem there. You are welcome to download the V5 trial from our home page and see this for yourself.

RE: Failed to Update System Registry

Thanks, I run version 5.0 already but some of my users still have my app written in version 4.0.
