Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Restricted Lookup

I wnant to be able to create a lookup from within my Music database, restricted to one entry only of each artist and title. I can do this in Alpha 4 ver 3 by using the lookup index with unique values only, but I haven't found a way (Yet) with Alpha5 v4. Anyone any ideas.
My database has over 15000 entries, only about 12000 are unique (I may have just one copy of a track, but some tracks I have 7 or 8 copies of)

    RE: Restricted Lookup

You don't provide much information about which version of lookup (lookup, lookupc, lookupn) or where (field rule, form calculated field, etc) you are operating.

Lookupc(), Lookupn(), etc accept a tagname parameter which can refer to an index on unique values.
    There can be only one.

      RE: Restricted Lookup

I am still new to this with Alpha5. On Alpha4 I have created a data entry form with field rules as follows:
Album Number, I use ALT+F to copy previous record, or F3 and type in first few chars of album name to identify Number.
Track number increments from previous entry but can be changed.
Artist: I type in first few chars and then press F3 to give me a list of UNIQUE entries on database, Highlight the one I want and artist and track info is entered automatically.
Can I do this in Alpha5?

        John:

You could look at the Index you used in the A4 lookup and copy its expression into the "display order" window of the field rule.

Not sure what you want but between that and the 'filter' section you might work out what you need.

          RE: Restricted Lookup

          More information is still needed:

Highlight the one I want - the one what: track? name of song? date recorded? From your second entry it sounds like track number but that doesn't make any sense to me because it doesn't seem that (a) one track would always have the same artist and (b) unless you are documenting only one HUGE recording media, each media/source (such as CD) would probably start from track #1 so it wouldn't make sense to only show the track #1 from one source.

I couldn't find any way to do in A5 what you were doing in A4. My guess is that your table is not properly normalized (I hate to even use that word) and possibly a restructure of your existing data would resolve the problem. No guarantees but it might be a solution.

If you could explain your table and set structures along with the lookup requirements (or post a reduced version of your app with most records deleted), someone might be able to suggest a solution.
