Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    WinXP file sharing

Peer to peer network, some XP, some 98. Alpha tables used to reside on 98 machine, runtime 4.03 on users systems. Worked fine. 98 machine too slow and small, upgraded to very fast p4 512meg, etc. Win XP home. Copied all Alpha files to new folder on new machine, in root directory, everyone has r/w access, simple file sharing. Problem: after 2 folks 'log in' (using runtime package on their PC's) third user just hangs. Gets Alpha splash screen, progress bar runs to completion and that's it. I have devel. package on my machine (4.5) does same thing. If two folks already using files on 'file server", I can't get access. No errors on any machine. I also run UPS Worldship on these machines, tables on 'file server'. No problem. 4,5,6 users, all get access. And it all worked on the old 98 machine. Some unknown interaction between Alpha and XP. Any ideas ?

    RE: WinXP file sharing

Are there other users connected to this "server" that are not using Alpha? XP Pro allows 10 network users, XP Home only allows 5. (see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314882). It sounds like you are hitting this limitation, which Wondows 98 does not have.

No. We only use it for UPS and Alpha (as well as system backups which only run at night). Kicking everyone and everything off got me up to three Alpha users. Going to Control Panel/Administration/etc./shared folders shows only three users, no hidden stuff. I have a multi-user license for Win XP Pro (without SP1, thank you Microsoft...) so I can try an upgrade (with 80 meg download of SP1). I knew about the 10 user limit of XP Pro, didn't realize Home had only 5. Does the limit apply to specific folders or shares in general ? I will never have more than 5 Alpha users, may have a few more folks hooked into UPS. A little disappointing that I got no error messages.

At least it's a start. Thanks.

If you take a look at the MS URL I posted above, you can see their full explanation about what counts as a connection. But in short, if you have 3 UPS users and another 2 Alpha users, the third Alpha user would be counted as the 6th connection and therefore be denied by XP.

Thank you Microsoft. Still had problems with only three connections (at least that's what shared folders said) would not let another one in. I can get into UPS with three Alpha users, but not into Alpha. So XP is still turning a knob somewhere. During initial database open, could Alpha somehow count as more than one user ? It should access only one shared folder on the file system.

            RE: WinXP file sharing

"upgraded" to XP Pro to get around the 5 user limit. Still no good. XP users (2) can usually get access to A5, 98 users are hit or miss. No one else accessing anything, XP Admin tools/Comp Mgmt/Shared Folders shows only 2 or 3 active connections, so I haven't hit that limit. UPS Worldship works for all users, so I think this is an A5 problem. Runtime (build 230) loads OK, when opening database, can see folder and .adb file. Dbl click and A5 hangs. No network activity. Have to use Task Manager to terminate it. And the very same setup worked fine when the files were stored on a 98se system. A5 must expect a slightly different response than XP provides.

            I'm open to suggestions.
