Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Child Records with no match

I upload out of a spreadsheet to a child table within a set. Then I need to find the orphaned records who need a match in the parent tables. How do I go about doing that?

    Bruce,

There are several ways to do this.

    Here's one:

    1) Unmark all the records in the child table
    2) Run an operation against the child table to mark each record if and only if the link field value is not found in the corresponding index list for the parent table. (Use the Exist() function, but negate it. i.e. .NOT. Exist(Key Value, TableFileName, Index Tagname)

When finished the records needing attention in the parent table have been marked in the child table.

Am I running this mark operation in the set or in the child table?

RE: Child Records with no match

Forget the previous one line question. I tried to run this operation but it selected all the child records so obviously I didn't set it up correctly. I guess you mean run this in the child table independent of the set.

My statement was as shown below, where "New_Name" is the field name in the child table Nmroy1, and Well.dbf is obviously the parent table, and well_name is the corresponding index in well.dbf, and it is also the linking field in the parent. I know I set this up wrong or it wouldn't have marked all the records. The question is what did I do wrong?

Have you looked at the subtract operation? It should put the two files together and produce a third file of orphans.

Had not thought about that, will consider that as I have time in the next couple of days.

              Bruce,

Yes. My suggestion requires you to run the ops against the table, not the set. I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

without knowing the structure of your tables and the index tag names you used I have no clue what you did wrong. The result of your expression was that Alpha Five could find no matching records in the primary table of your set that corresponded to the value of the "New_name" field in your child table. So it marked all the records in the child table.

For the Exist() function to work the table being searched must have a predefined index in place. This index must correspond to the field you're searching. This is explained in the xbasic reference manual.

Here's a working example using two saved operations.

The UnmarkVehicles operation unmarks all the records in the Vehicles table.

The MarkOrphans operation marks each record in the Vehicles table that is orphaned, vis-a-vis the Customers table.

Unzip the attachment to an empty folder.

              Hope this helps.

Tom, I just now am having a chance to look at your last response, and thanks for the zip file as that made all the difference in teh world when I could see an example.

Now, having set this up, I need to figure out how to only print one representative child record that does not have a match. I could have 50 or more of the same child value, and so I wouldn't want to print all these records.
