Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Variably Speaking

Hello out there! I'm having trouble getting some Global Variables to update after I select a customer on an order entry form. I select the customer using a pop-up from a table lookup defined in the table field rules. I have a customer table that contains several logical fields about how customer's orders are to be handled. I want the values of those logical fields to update corresponding Global variables so that I may display them on an order detail form to help my operators. I have built a test DB with a Customer table, a Jobs table, and one form. In the jobs table structure I have added three global variables for the three customer table records I want to capture. The jobs table also has a field rule for the "acct_no" field to perform a table lookup. The lookup should update five fields on the form when the customer is selected. The form has 6 fields, three of which are actually written to the jobs table. The other three fields are global variables which have been previously defined in the table structure. These fields are read only and normally would be hidden. My plan was to transfer these field values to the next form which is my order detail form. I have not included this form for brevity but I want the values displayed on this form so my operators can make some key decisions on how the customer order is entered.
My observation is that the form field values never change. I also can tell that my Customer lookup pop-up window does correctly display the customer field values. Adding the global values to the form has no affect.
To see what I mean, open the form and hit the new record button. Hit tab to go to the Account field, the account lookup will pop-up. Select a customer and notice the values for the three logical fields at the right of the pop-up window. The Customer account number and name fill but the value fields never change.

    What am I missing here?

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

The table lookup works on the principal of mapping fields one-to-one. Up dating Global variables requires a script.

      RE: Variably Speaking

Global variables won't change by themselves.

You need to code the Form OnChange for Acct_No and/or button OnPush event(s) to update the Global variables.

      eg:
      VAR-"BB = "some_new_value"
      VAR-"NA = "some_new_value"
      RE_LBL = "some_new_value"

btw, even though you can change the Global variables,
you have no way of retaining their values for records
      entered.

My thoughts on the attached zip involve a different methodolgy but might work for you.
