Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xtra chars

    Hi Phorum,

    I have the following expression in a field rule of a table level calc field.

    select

    case nite_hold = "Y" .and. mini = "Y"
    TOLLS + PARKING + FFD + 12.5
    case mini = "Y" .and. nite_hold = "N"
    TOLLS + PARKING + FFD + 7.5
    case nite_hold = "Y" .and. mini = "N"
    (DRVR_PAY * MILEAGE) + TOLLS + PARKING + FFD +5
    case nite_hold = "N" .and. mini = "N"
    (DRVR_PAY * MILEAGE) + TOLLS + PARKING + FFD

    end select

    It says extra characters at end of expression, do I need pointers in a field rule?

    RE: Xtra chars

    No, but you do need to assign the result of the expression
    ie:
    TOLLS + PARKING + FFD + 12.5

    should really be

    result_field = TOLLS + PARKING + FFD + 12.5

    unless of course you are referring to table columns, in which case you want

    result_field = Tablename->TOLLS + Tablename->PARKING + Tablename->FFD + 12.5

      RE: Xtra chars

      Hi Melvin,

      The resulting field is drver_cost.

      Hence: in each case statement I added >>> ie

      drver_cost = TOLLS + PARKING + FFD + 12.5
      I still get the extra chars error.

        Hi Guys,

        Now it looks like this but still says extra chars.

        tbl=table.current()
        if tbl.mode_get() > 0
        select

        case tbl.nite_hold = "Y".and. tbl.mini = "Y"
        tbl.drver_cost = tbl.TOLLS + tbl.PARKING + tbl.FFD + 12.5
        case tbl.mini = "Y" .and. tbl.nite_hold = "N"
        tbl.drver_cost = tbl.TOLLS + tbl.PARKING + tbl.FFD + 7.5
        case tbl.nite_hold = "Y" .and. tbl.mini = "N"
        tbl.drver_cost = (tbl.DRVR_PAY * tbl.MILEAGE) + tbl.TOLLS + tbl.PARKING + tbl.FFD +5
        case tbl.nite_hold = "N" .and. tbl.mini = "N"
        tbl.drver_cost = (tbl.DRVR_PAY * tbl.MILEAGE) + tbl.TOLLS + tbl.PARKING + tbl.FFD

        end select
        end if

              Calculated fields in tables or for layouts are limited to one line expressions, scripts or snippets are not allowed.

              Try

              case(nite_hold = "Y" .and. mini = "Y",
              TOLLS + PARKING + FFD + 12.5,mini = "Y" .and. nite_hold = "N",TOLLS + PARKING + FFD + 7.5,nite_hold = "Y" .and. mini = "N",(DRVR_PAY * MILEAGE) + TOLLS + PARKING + FFD +5,nite_hold = "N" .and. mini = "N",(DRVR_PAY * MILEAGE) + TOLLS + PARKING + FFD)

              or convert the select...end select to a function and call it in the field rule.
              There can be only one.

                Hi Phorum,

                Many thanks to Melvin and Stan. Although I have not tested all combinations it has done the job so far.

                BTW, how would I have known that field rules only accept 1 liners?

                Many thanks again,

                  RE: Xtra chars

                  Anywhere you are presented with the expression builder there is a one line limit.

                  The xbsic code editor is for scipts.

                  Footnote:
                  You might be able to use the semicolon to construct something like:

                  for i = 1 to t;t= i + 1;next i

                  and have that be a one liner.

                  Better bet is to use a user defined function.
                  There can be only one.

                      Ed,

                      In addition to Stan's expert answer, from
                      ye "User Guide" pg. 203,

                      "
                      Key Terms

                      Expression = any combination of fields, constant values (such as 2 or "Fred"), functions and operators
                      that can be evaluated to a single value. For example 2+2 is an expression that evaluates to 4.
                      "

                      A bit obscure, but it implies only one statement. :)

                        Your are absolutely right when you say it is obscure. I think, the key part of the rule is "evaluate to a single value".

                          At the risk of being contentious.
