Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Importing from Excel

    I am using Alpha5 Version 4.03 Build 230.

I'm trying to import an Excel Verison 4 sheet. When I click on the box that says the first row is the data labels, I'm informed that Alpha 5 is shutting down and >kerblooey

Check the frist row for odd column names. Not advisable to have any punctuation in column titles, i.e. "P/L". Good idea to eliminate spaces, not begin column name with a number. File being imported should have max ten character name, same constraints.
    There can be only one.

      Well...

I tried all the of ideas you mentioned with no change in success. I still get an "Application error"

It dawns on me that it could be an operating system issue. This is Windows 2000 Professional.

      Thanks.

        Hello Eric,

Have you tried to name the fields yourself, instead of using the column headings. Has sorted problems for me in the past.

        Good Luck

          RE: Importing from Excel

Yes. I can name the fields myself without a problem. The problem isn't with the import but rather with this very small part of the import process, picking the names off the 1st line of the Excel file. It's a pain in the neck to have to hand enter these since the facility to avoid this is supposed to be working....especially since this is supposed to be part of a script I'd hoped to make work.

          I'm still experimenting a bit.

            Eric,

It still sounds like the column headings are 'illegal' fieldnames in a DBF. Care to post them here so we can check them for you ?

              Tom-

Here's a file named TestImport1.xls which duplicates the problem. All records are gone. It contains only the headings.

I work in Excel XP but save in Excel 4.0 spreadsheet format.

              Thanks.

Thanks, I don't see anything that looks amiss. Perhaps you can post a sheet with dummy data ? Please also clarify whether you're importing to an existing DBF or to a new DBF each time ?

                  Tom-

I have essentially the same result whether I try the import into a new file or into an emptied existing file. When I use the existing file, I am allowed to use the field names from the dbf file provided that I select them one at a time. However, when I click to tell A5 that the first row contains field names, >poof

                    RE: Importing from Excel

                    Eric,

Using A5V5.5 (build 266) and the Import Genie I was able to easily build an import operation that pulled your sheet into a new table. Used option to name fields after first row entries. Worked exactly as expected. No finagling required. The resulting table is attached. -- tom

                      RE: Importing from Excel

It appears the problem may be confined to A5V4 then. Unfortunately I don't have the option to upgrade this license so I'll just have to muddle thorugh.

                      Thanks.

                        Eric,

There was a typo in my previous post. I did the import using Version 4.5 of alpha five. (vers 5.5 hasn't been released yet)

                        what version are you using?

did you try it with the example I uploaded ?

                          RE: Importing from Excel

                          Eric,

Here's an example, using Alpha Five version 4.5.

Unzip the attachment to an empty folder.

                          Open Form1.

You'll find 2 buttons. One will import your spreadsheet to a new table, the other will import it to an existing table.

                          Hope this helps.

                            Eric and Tom:

                            I'm just looking in here...

Eric: I tried importing your sample file in A5 V4.5 Bld 266 using the Import Genie and top row for field names. It worked perfectly on Win98SE.

Tom: I tried your example for Eric and it worked perfectly after I resaved the path names in each operation. That, too, was a learning experience - Alpha doesn't change them to the current datapath apparently. Could that be a problem when you try to distribute? Or [as always] am I missing something.

                            Thanks

                              Howdy,
I looked at your files and the problem probably is the Save As Excel 4 in XP. I've had repeated problems with the MS version emulation in XP. Thats why I have Office V4 pro, 97, 2000, and XP on my machine. I'd suggest that saving as a csv or dbf from Excel would be more stable. I have had to adapt several protocals to do this in the last few versions of MS Office.

                              Good Luck
