Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Topspeed ODBC Driver

    Hi guys,

    Im new here, just want to ask the programming guros here...
    Im researching for a week now and still dont know how im going to ever start this project...

    I need to create a program for WINDOWS 98 OS that will read and update records from a tps database file using either C++ (Troltech QT, MFC) or VB 6 (sorry I could be in the wrong forum) ...
    I found TPS ODBC Driver but i have to shell out 250 bucks for a tool that I might never use again and for a tool that Im not sure will work (if only they offer free trial version) on my program... Im stuck,.... any suggestions would really be appreciated... thanks in advance...

    Re: Topspeed ODBC Driver

    ark,
    I also have a Clarion based piece of software that uses the proprietary .tps driver. Am a bit surprised you found a tps driver that cheap as when I checked it was over $500. There is no way to get all the data out in its correct format unless you do use the correct driver...and make sure it IS the correct driver as they vary according to version as to what will work and not work for a specific .tps file.

    You can get a bit of data out by printing to the Generic Text driver supplied with windows...sometimes. I also found a "TPS reader" that allows me to see some of the structure of some of the files....but I have some that were encrypted so is of no use then for them that are.

    Good luck and if you find a way to extract your data, please post back---there have been others previously that have wanted to do this as well.
    Mike

      thanks for the immediate reply...

      here is the tps driver

      http://http://shop.softvelocity.net/...E.qscstrfrnt03

      unfortunately, Im yet to know the version of the tps database that Im trying to manipulate, but I think its quite old now, an old version, since it was installed on WIN98 and I found C5*.dll on the folder which might indicate that its possibly version 5? but It could be wrong... and also, I can view and manipulate the file using the built in topscan.exe... but unfortunataly, topscan.exe has no command utilities.... so It is basically useless on my program... I just want to create a simple program that can read and update
      that single tps file of the System that we are integrated in.... Its basically one-time use thats why Im hesitant to buy this driver let alone I dont even know if its suited on the version of the tps im trying to access.. Im really stuck...

        Re: Topspeed ODBC Driver

        I now have the ODBC driver and was succesfully installed... but now my problem
        is the connection string...

        here is the connection string I found on my research,,

        'constr={Topspeed ODBC Driver};Dbq=C:\\VSProjects\\TPSSample\\MySample.TPS\\!;Datefield=MyDateField|MyOtherDateField;TimeField=MyTimeField|MyOtherTimeField;

        but i changed it to this because I dont know the datefield etc field means and what I supposed to put there..

        constr = "{Topspeed ODBC Driver};Dbq=C:\\COMTRNS.tps\;PWD=;"

          ark,
          It sounds like you are attempting this without using the genie....if so, why? I have found the genies to be of the utmost help in creating the xbasic/strings necessary to do what is wanted. In this case I would probably use the AlphaDAO genie to start from an import or export aspect. I have little knowledge otherwise but have had no problems with these SQL/ODBC connection strings when attempted in this fashion.

          EDIT: unless, of course, you are attempting this without using Alpha Five and then you would have to go to whatever forum supports whatever developing platform you may be using. :)

          The connection string will most likely vary considerably between platforms I imagine.
