Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report Totals

    Hello All,

I have a grouped report based on an inverted 1 to many set. I would like to total the different client numbers in the detail section (of each group)is this possible ?
i.e I could have client number DD00012 appear 7 times in the group section but would only want to count 1 instance of it, I already have a calc field to count the number of records in the group.
I have tried using the Count of Duplicates, and blank duplicate functions when creating the calc field but with no joy.

As always any help is greatly appreciated.

    Many Thanks

    RE: Report Totals

In the Group footer section, create a calculated field on the group break field, with Count as the function. In Advaced, specify for Group your group break field. Click ok.

Now, go to Reports, Calculated fields and alter the expression with an IF statement:

    IF( count expression>1, 1,0)

If the count is greater than 1, you'll see a total of 1, otherwise, you'll get a zero.

      RE: Report Totals

      Hello Gedi,

Many thanks for taking the time to respond. Unfortunately I am still not where I need to be. Let me try to explain a little more.
The report is grouped on Telesales_Id, within each group a client may appear once or many times, I would only like to count 1 instance of each client. I hope below may give you more of an idea. (This is make believe test data)

      Client Num Phone Number

      DS1002 011225414
      DS1002 011225413
      DS1002 011225412
      DS1003 017145487
      DS1004 021545555
      DS1004 021545554

Total Number of Clients = 3
Total Number Of Phone Numbers = 7 (This Calc Field Currently Works)

This is how I would like the calculated field to work.

Once again thanks for your time, I will be out of the office until Monday.
As always any help is greatly appreciated.

      Cheers
      Tom

Many months on and this issue has reared its ugly head again, and I can't find a workaround. I would really like to produce a calculated field to total clients as detailed in the above posts.
ANY help with this as always greatly appreciated.

          Many Thanks

            RE: Report Totals

            Thomas,

            Would something like this work:

            1) create a new calc field like this:

            IF(Client Num "" PREVIOUS("Client Num"), 1, 0)

The idea is to have the calc field generate a 1 if the current Client Num field value is different from the one before it, otherwise it should generate a zero.

            2) prepare a second calc field which totals the first calc field and drop it in your group footer.

The blank space in your field name may cause trouble. A very good rule to follow is to NEVER user blank spaces in table or fieldnames. In fact, I never use them at all. If spacing helps legibility, I use a hard underscore, like this: Client_Num
