Hi Phorum,

I developed a purchase order application for a food broker client of mine that has been running very well for about 2 years. Recently his office found that 1 of his clients was duplicating PO numbers from another client on occasion. I want to add a letter to the end of a duplicate so it doesn't overwrite the original. However my client said that the supplier will use the PO number on the order to reference the invoice that gets sent to the buyer, and hence it will not match the order and will not be recognized.

Can anyone tell me the easiest way to strip the last character from "PONUM" so that an added A, B or C will show on the input form but be stripped off in the printed report that is faxed to the supplier?

Example: Existing PO number might be 16509 and another order from a different client be 15609 of which adding an A to, would be 15609A. But when the report is printed it would only show 15609

If you guarantee that the filled width will always be 7 chars wide, just peel off the left 6 chars, like this:

dim temp_po as C
temp_po = left(po_number_field,6)


If the filled width is variable it's a bit more complex,
you have to figure the trimmed length and then peel off one
fewer chars, like this:

dim temp_po as C
temp_po = left(po_number,Len(trim(po_number_field))-1)


This assumes you're keeping the PO_number in a char type field, otherwise you have to change the foregoing to convert the numeric value to character type before peeling off the desired characters.

Hi Tom,

That looks good to me. The ponum field is a 10 character field where the data length is variable, usually 5 or more characters long. I'll get to it tomorrow when I get to home sweet home.
