Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Missing table in set

I have a set that has a missing table. Here's the curious part: The parent can not be found but the set (in fact the application) works fine! The child tables are there--and I can add what looks like the parent that is found in the same directory and it will show up under the 'tables/Sets' tab. But when I look at just this table--there's nothing in it!?

That's the strangest thing I've done yet. Where the heck is the parent file?

    RE: Missing table in set

I have recovered from this curious event. First, I opened the table that was missing data in a word processor. The data was in there but I could not see it using A5. So, I decided to copy the table to another for inspection. When I did this the data was visible. When I looked at the original table that had been missing the data--it's now there!? What the heck? Anyway, I love answering my own posts. But if any of you gurus want to attempt to explain this I'd listen.

      Dennis,

Until a guru shows up, I'll hazard a guess. Sounds like a problem with your video display adapter. I'd dial down the hardware acceleration if the problem occurs again.

        You're right. That's a hazard.

          Dennis,
If you have a back up of the database, go to that one and add what is missing from the back up and update the indexes, that should take care of the problem.

            Dennis,

Another simple explanation might be this.

If you ran a query against the table and then closed the form, when you next open the table the query will remain in effect, limiting the apparent range of records displayed on screeen, until you change it by pushing the 'Show all' icon on the toolbar. Alpha Five does this to be helpful, but it strikes some as counter-intuitive.

              RE: Missing table in set

I thought about that and that has scared the hell out of me before--I wouldn't change it though since I do like that feature. Sometimes I do a fairly complicated query--don't save it--then do something stupid like close the app. But, that said, the first thing I do is reset the query (i.e.,show all).

This was different. I just couldn't see the table--I could still see the records. Now that's strange.

Anyway--everything came back once I started massaging it a bit. Good idea though. My users think I'm a hero though when they call me and say their records are gone!

Something interesting and related: Try making the first field you enter REQUIRED. Then query a record. Delete that record. Now try to do anything else with your database. You can't. The secret: do a SHOW ALL.
