Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: V4.5 and Windows 7

According to the Microsoft website, you can download the XP mode and virtual pc for Win 7 if you have Win 7 ultimate, enterprise or professional.

      Re: V4.5 and Windows 7

      Hi,

I have users I'm supporting who are using V4.5 After installing Windows 7 they are not able to open the app.

I have had them download and install the files from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx

What else is needed? How should they setup the properties on the icon to open the app.

      What am I missing?

      Thanks

      Tom

        Re: V4.5 and Windows 7

I think that they can only run virtual XP mode with Windows 7 Pro and above, I have managed to get a couple of users running under XP mode and launching from there but have yet to figure out the shortcut properties that launch directly from the Windows 7 mode.

I have virtual PC on my Vista machine but haven't installed another OS to use with it. As I understand it, to run anything that's in the VM, you have to log into the VM, similar to having numerous users on one PC. Maybe I misunderstood.

            Robert,

I believe you are correct. The start menu gives you this option, "Run in Virtual XP Mode", then you install your startup icon on the desktop that comes up next and all is good (or so they tell me).

There is a way to move the app into a vitual folder and change the shortcut to start from within Windows 7 (Start>Virtual XP>XP Mode Application)so the user is unaware of XP mode but I have not yet managed to figure this out. Also you will need to go to the top of the XP window and choose USB to set the printers.

                Re: V4.5 and Windows 7

                GOOD NEWS!!

I have a user who shared this video on how to setup v4.5 in the Windows 7 environment, then access it from the windows 7 desktop.

                See here: http://www.genesiscarecenters.com/re...7_VPC_PALS.wmv

                http://www.genesiscarecenters.com/re...7_VPC_PALS.wmv

Hope the above works. My app, PALs Software, in this demo is a v4.5 app.

Whatdoyathink? This seems pretty complicated to setup, but I guess you only need to do it once. I don't have Window 7, yet. But I need to support users who do.

                Anyone see any shortcuts?

                Tom

                  Tom,
A nice video to have. Seems very straight-forward to me really and not overly complex at all so cannot see how to shorten any of it. The "middle" part of the video concern networking so would not apply to all users. The beginning regarding XP Mode is also spelled out pretty clearly on Micosoft's website as well I thought, but this video gives a nice visual step by step so should help many users.

                  Thanks for sharing.

BTW--did you ever just try XP compatibility mode to see if it worked? (not the same as above)
                  Mike

                    Re: V4.5 and Windows 7

Hi All-I have A5V4.5 which is the wifes program for work running on Vista and decided to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium as I wasnt a big Vista fan. I ran the compatability mode before the Windows 7 install and it did not kick out Alpha 5. So the wife sits down to do her work and clicks on the app and gets an error. I reloaded the software and got the same error. I backed up all her files to an external hard drive, delete the program and do a full reinstall and SOS.

Looking at these threads it looks like I need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro to get this back up and running. I just wanted to ask some of the Alpha users if this is the case before I spend more $$ on upgrading to Windows 7 Pro. This could save my marriage!!

Thank you in advance for any insight.

                      Re: V4.5 and Windows 7

I have tried everything and my experience is V4.5 will not run on Win 7 unless you have Win 7 Pro or Ultimate then download free Microsoft Virtual XP. It will then run when in virtual XP mode.

I remember reading other posts that suggest Sun's Virtual Box which is free.
