Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Color equation

    Hi Phorum,

    Where, if anywhere, can I put a color equation on a text or rich text object?
    Appreciate all help,

    I don't believe you can directly in form properties. However, you can change the properties of a text object with xbasic. For example, is a text object is named "text1"

    topparent:text1.Font.Color = "red"
    topparent:text1.font.name = "Arial"

    Instead of a color equation, you could put the code in an object event and change the text when the object event fires.

    As for a RTF object, I don't see an easy method to access the properties even in xbasic.

        RE: Color equation

        Hi Everyone,

        I decided that it is easier to hide the text object and then show it when 3 conditions are met. Originally I was going to make the object foreground and background the same color as the form background. However ..... the following gives the error: "missing right parenthesis".

        if(sup_nam="food tech international".and.client_nam=publix.and.isnotblank("del_dat"),parentform.text16.show())

        Where: sup_nam must equal food tech international
        client_nam must equal publix
        del_dat must have a date value

        The text object is text16

        Where is my error?

          One of the problems with error messages is that frequently they are an approximation of the actual error. The first question is, where is this expression being used? The references sup_nam, clien_nam, and del_dat appear to be field names. If that is the case, this mehod of reference will only work in field rules, which would be an unusual place for such code.

          I see a number of syntax errors that might cause the message.

          parentform.text16.show()

          should be

          parentform:text16.show()

          with a colon between parentform and text16. Also, an if() statement requires a value for both a true and false result.

          if(logical expression, true result, false result)

          Your expression only shows a true result. Returning an object method as a return value may not make sense in some contexts. It would work in an object event, but then the field references don't make sense.

          Another problem is the use of isnotblank, as it doesn't always behave as expected. A better method is to convert a date to a text value with cdate() and test if the text is empty

          alltrim(cdate(datevalue)) = ""

          Your logical expression shows mixed syntax. sup_nam="food tech international" makes sense if you intend the expression to be true is the text in sup_name is "food tech international". However, client_nam=publix implies that client_nam equals the value in a variable (or field)named publix and not the text value "publix". isnotblank("del_dat") will always be true as putting del_dat in quotes makes it a text value, and obviously is not blank.

          Now this is some quesswork, but if the table involved is named "mytable" and the names I questioned are field names, this might mork, depending an where it is used.

          if(mytable->sup_nam="food tech international".and.mytable->client_nam="publix".and.alltrim(cdate(mytable->del_dat))"",parentform:text16.show(),parentform:text16.hide())

            RE: Color equation

            Hi Jerry,

            I copied and pasted your conditional expression into the ondepart event of client_nam,, changing only "mytable" to orders_new. Oh, 1 other thing, I had to put a forward slash (/)after food tech. However, it does not show text16 when sup_ name is food tech international, client_nam is publix and a date is in del_date.

            Any ideas,
            Ed

              RE: Color equation

              Edward,

              There is no need for the forward slash. I have attached a zip file with a test table with the same name as your table and the field names you indicated. Unzip the table and files to any folder and attach it to any database.

              The expression does work on the form "test_hide". The text field is initially hidden, but if you enter "publix" as the client name in the first record, and depart the field, the text will show.

                Hi Jerry,

                I am sorry I wasn't able to get back to you sooner, I just spent 2 days in Indianapolis on another system.

                You are absoluely right, your zip file works liike a charm. I checked yours against mine and could not see a difference except for the frontslash(/). The frontslash got there because of the spaces in food tech international which gave errors until I put in what I thought is a line continuation character, however, I typed the line in a WP then copied and pasted and it went in as 1 contigious line and works ok. I need to do the same thing now on the report, I'll put the code on the printinit event of the report.
                Thank you,
                efs
