Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Enter data in a named browse

    Hi Phorum,

    Keep in mind while reading this that this has been running quite well for about 2 years.

    On a form based on a 1-N set there are 7 fields to fill in. The first field is filled in by the parent
    table. For about 95% of the 800 records added each month, four(4) of the fields are identical data.
    Hence on the form that calls the data entry form I loaded the fields that are identical. This way the
    user only has to enter data in 2 fields which helps tremendously to speed up data entry. There is
    nothing fancy about these two(2) fields, they are straight forward numerical fields. BTW, these
    seven fields are entered into a saved browse.

    Suddenly, when the record is saved, the data in these two(2) fields is not saved, the other five(5)
    fields are saved as they should be.

    Open to all suggestions,
    efs

    RE: Enter data in a named browse

    Hi Phorum (updated info),

    When I look at the browse where I enter data from the control panel, I see all of the data. Yet when this browse is placed on a form, most of the data does not appear. There are no filters on the form containing the brose.

      Hi Phorum,

      When the named browse appears on the form it contains five(5) records. When I open that same browse in the control panel it contains 25 records. There are no restrictions on the form nor is there a filter.

      Out of ideas,
      efs

        If the browse is from a child table, have you checked the links and reindexed? You might also try the universal cure all - compacting the database.

          Hi Ohlen,

          I have rebuilt the index as well as making a new one(1) and compacted several times. Two(2) other things, when I open the named browse in control panel the records that I tried to enter in the usual form are there in tact. Secondly if I try to enter records in the browse dierectly from the control panel, the only fields that actually save are the same two(2) that I cannot enter and save in the form. Let me re-emphasize there are no restrictions or filters on the browse or the form where the browse is bedded. I accidently entered the app in A5V5, could that have a serious impact on any of the scripts or code? I did not make any changes at the time, besides, the users machine does not have A5V5 installed and it does the same thing. Also, I made a new browse and it acts the same way. Later today I will make a new form for test purposes.

          I appreciate your response,
          Ed

            Ed,

            I think it sounds like your table's dictionary has become corrupted. If it were me, I'd save the data to a good backup, then restore the dictionaries for the table upon which the saved browse is based. The source of the restoration should pre-date the time you ran the app with A5V5.

              Hi Tom,

              I am convinced that a couple of weeks ago I made a change on the developement computer and then in turn, copied the dev folder to the user's machine. No other way can I imagine that 2 isolated machines could exhibit the same fault. But ...
              I have checked field rules, there are no field rules on the 2 fields in question. I have checked the embedded browse and the form it is on for filters as well as restrictions. I have compacted, reindexed, and made a new browse. Tonight I will make a new form with the same browse embedded (my last gasp). here is where it gets hairy, I open the named browse that is embedded from the control panel and POOF!!$E%$@$ the records are there as well as the 2 mystery fields. Now I think the form is corrupted, I'll find out tonight.

              Thanks for responding,
              Ed

                Continuing saga;

                OK, I made a new form and got the same results. Then I restored a backup of the folder from the month of April to a separate folder, SAME THING! Presently scrounging around for an older backup.

                I'll keep ya up to date,

                  RE: Enter data in a named browse

                  Endless saga,

                  When I open the embedded browse from the control panel, the mysterious missing data is there, it just doesn't appear in the embedded browse on the form. It seems as though the form is not getting repainted after the new data is entered. Hence, I am not sure where to put this, presently it is on the onwrote field event for the last column (dues)of the browse (browse1).

                  parentform:browse1.commit()
                  parentform:browse1.resynch()

                  I have a sneaky feeling it should be elsewhere.

                  Obviously I need advice,

                    Ed,

                    As you know there are a myriad of things that could account for this. I suggest you rethink your design and look for another way to solve this problem using a differently designed form.

                    Otherwise you'll need to master the various threads in this forum discussing ways to refresh embedded browse objects.
