Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I install a shortcut for application

Thanks for everyones help in the past.
I am going to sell an application in cd form. I can use dos to copy (install) to their computer, and change the read only attributes, But How do I copy a shortcut to the application to their desktop or start menu. When there was only window 3.1 I knew where to copy to. With all the versions of windows, how do I know where to copy the shortcut to?
    Any help would be appreciated.
Does anyone have an install program that would work?
Can I use alpha5 to run off cd to install the program?

    Thanks for your help

I've just gone thru the same process with the same questions and here's where I ended up....

The program should do all that you need. I tried it; bought it on line; and it serves me quite well.

    Take a look

I am not sure what you are referring to.
I am using the alpha5.exe with the nosplash, etc in the command line. I have the runtime also. On my hard drive when I get the application finished. I install the runtime to that directory. Then I copy all the files to the cd. I tried the demo for Astrum installer. It does pretty good. I have a couple more installers to try also.
Is there another way to run the program besides using alpha5 with command line options?
          I am using a5v4.03.

          Thanks for your help.

            Barron,

I do the same thing as you with one exception. I use Visual Basic 3 to call the whole thing. VB3 is acceptable all across windows from 3.1 to XP as long as you have VBrun300 in the same diretory or in the path. It is easy to do and most VB programmers would charge you very little to do it for you if you do not have VB. This way you dont have to insert the complete command line to start your program every time.

There are many other programs out there that you can use to make an exe to call alpha. I just happen to have my own copy of VB3 and VB6

            Good Luck

              Thanks for your help,
I looked at the Astrum installer. I made a test run and it looks very good. I will buy it unless I find somthing better very soon.
I don't have visual basic. But I do not like having to have the command line to open the application. It seems it would be too easy for the command line to get corrupted or misplaced on customers computer.
If you know the name of some program to make the exe file I would appreciate it. I will search and try to find something. Or try to locate someone to do it for me. any more info would help.

              Thanks a lot.

                Barron,

You may try ebay for vb3. the reason for vb3 is it is a little easier and works all the way up.

If you do get it, I will send you the code as I wrote it and you can make/change it to suit your needs.

Thanks a Lot. I will be glad to do that. I did not want to use command lines. But I don't have time to learn new progamming right now. When I get it I will let you know.

This will solve the last problem I think I have before generating the final application.

                  Thanks again.
