Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Importing data frm Alpha 4 V6

    Hi,
I have to import data frm A4 V6 on one computor running Win 3.1, to a different computor using A5 V 4.5 running Win Millenium.
The old computor has no modem and flopies are the only common back-up system.

I have found it works ok to export 2000 records at a time from the old computor to a floppy, and import the records frm the floppy to the new computor running our A5 app.

If I export a group of records which includes the "last" record of the file frm A4 to a floppy, when I import frm the floppy to A5 it causes errors, crashes, etc.

Obviously I can work around this by not including the "last" record of the file; just did't know if this a known problem.

RE: Importing data frm Alpha 4 V6

    Brian,

Is that problem 1 particular record, or any record that is the last record in a file?

Just out of curiosity, have you tried saving the A4 V6 dbf file as an Excel and then copying to a floppy and then importing it to A5?

It may help you determine if the problem is an Alpha problem, or if it is just a problem with one particular record.

    Hope this helps.

      Brian,

I probably wouldn't bother to export the records to a different file format. If you copy them to a temporary DBF Alpha Five can append it just fine, one diskette full at a time.

RE: Importing data frm Alpha 4 V6

        Tom,
Thanks for the idea, I'll try that tomorrow. So I just do "file copy" in A4 and copy the original file to the floppy in A4? I think I get that, then I just append that file from the floppy into an existing file in A5 ?

On the same subject, I wrote the message after trying to transfer a file with fairly short records. When I tried the same method to transfer a different file with longer records, I found I could only transfer approx 500 records at a time. There was no indication that the floppy was full or anything, it just hung up the new computor when I was importing it, until I reduced the number of records down to approx 500.
Using the word " first" file instead of the number "1" also made it crash, as it did when using "last".

        Thanks for the advice,

        Brian.

          James A. Talbott, Jr.,

          Thanks for the response.

The problem happens when using "first" or "last" as the response to which records to export from A4 to the floppy, or it appears to be when the amount of data exported, or being tried to be imported, exceeds a certain quantity(pls see my response on message below).
That makes me think that it is a situation of A5, (not really a problem, when I found out how to work around it). It is just that until I tried reducing the amount of data I was trying to import from the floppy, the computor kept on crashing, giving an error message of windows, I think, that didnt tell me what I was doing wrong, when I considered I was just following the instructions.

Have not used Excel, and dont think I have that programe, unless it comes bundled with windows.

Those 2 files, that I have now nearly transfered are the biggest. All the others are smaller, so there should be less problems, I hope.

          Thanks for the help.

          Brian.

            Brian,

I think you're working way too hard.

If it were me, I'd zip the DBF and DBT files in to a single Zip file. Then I'd email it to myself, unzip it on the target machine, and append it to the A5V5 application. Other options exist if the two machines are on the same network.

If you have to use floppies and the new machine can't use the internet yet, your zip utility will span multiple disketters just fine.

RE: Importing data frm Alpha 4 V6

              Jay,
It happens if I use the export from A4 to the floppy and set the files to be exported either "first" to eg. "2000", or "8000" to last. It doesnt like the words "first" or "last"; substituting for "1" or the number of the last record cures the crashing of the A5 into which I end up trying to do the import.
It also has the same result if the amount of data being imported from the floppy exceeds a certain unknown amount.

I do not have Excel, so have not tried that.

It is not a problem with a particular record. After I posted the message, I tried to transfer another file with larger records. Transfering the first file worked ok providing I limited the number of records on each floppy transfer to 2000. On the next file, with larger records, it only worked when I limited the transfers to 500 records each time. Until I reduced to that amount I got crashes on the A5 computor each time.
So it doesnt like the words "first" or "last", or too much data on each floppy - now I know.

Thanks for the help and response.

                Tom,
                Thanks for the response.

The old, first, computor does not have a modem and neither computor is on a network.

I guess I could copy zip utility onto the old machine, via a floppy ?, and then zip things to a floppy then unzip in the new machine. Would that be that much better ?

The concept of walking the floppy between computors is not really bothering me, it is just strange that it did not like to import records that started with "first" rather than number "1", and also "last".

I'll try your suggestion of using temp dbf files on floppys; it might help my other big problem of importing accented letters, which are not going across correctly from the old A4 files to the new A5 files.
Also, it seems I am resulting with a "violated dbf" file, so there may well be other problems happening; which I will/would have to sort out using the system I am using so far.

                Brian.

                  Brian,

What ever happened to paralell to Paralell networking? Just a thought to keep your mind busy.

If those files are that big and were gonna take a bunch of time, I would pay for the parts to a small temporary network. 2 cards, and a cable = about 30.00!

                  Good Luck

My recollection is that Win3.1 does not support networking - you need Win3.11 - Windows for Workgroups.

                        Hi,
Thanks to all for the help. I did the transfer using floppys, no real problems.
Now I can get on with the app.

                        Thanks
