Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Any email and hyperlink capabilities in Version 4?

    I have a copy of GoldMine contact program that uses .dbf files and has email and hyperlink capabilities.
    It has an internal email program. It also has a field that handles hyperlinks.
    I don't care for the interface and would love to be able to develope a comparable application through Alpha 5.
    I can justify buying the upgrade to V.4 but have gotten a headache searching the forum to see if v.4 has the field capabilites I need. I'm 99% sure that it doesn't but that leaves room for error.
    Can I (somewhat easily) send email from V.4 and have a separate field containing a hyperlinked url?

    Try the following:

    For email:
    dim global vMail as C
    vMail = alltrim(Your_Email_adddress.value)
    sys_open("mailto:"+vMail+"?subject= Enter Subject Here")

    To go to an URL use the following:

    dim ws as C
    ws= "Http:"+Chr(47)+Chr(47)+alltrim(Your_www.value)
    Sys_open(ws)

    Hope this helps

      Thanks, Tom.
      Looks like I'll be upgrading to A5.4.

        After mulling over your response the last couple of days I started wondering if your answer would also work in A5v.1. In using A5 v.1 I've never had to deal with variables so I can't easily test what you told me in V.1 without learning about variables. I tried what you gave me in v.1 and played around with it using information in my Xbasic manual to make some changes but don't know if it didn't work simply because there's a different procedure for setting up variables and I couldn't figure out the proper way or because v.1 just can't do email and hyperlinking.
        So, now I'm wondering if the same basic formulas you offered for V.4 should also work in V.1 with some minor changes? Do you have any idea whether it would work? If it does then I probably don't have to upgrade to version 4. Version 1 has served me faithfully for so many years that it wouldn't be a backbreaker to upgrade but it would still be nice to save $150.00 anyway if V.1 will do what I need.

          OK. I thought to look around and found the telephone number for sales which told me there are no email capabilities in version 4.5. So, I'm confused. Can anyone help me with some clarification?

            Email capabilities are not built into A5V4 in the same way that it is in A5V5. A5V5 has a built in email client. You don't need Outlook or Eudura or whatever. Having said that, Tom's method will link you to an existing email client like Outlook, if you have it loaded. Many users have found all kinds of ways to get the capabilities they wanted in the older version, even when such functionality wasn't "built=in"

              Ok. That should work for me and confirms what I expected. I can picture how that would play out and the fact that I have to have Outlook running to send email will not be an issue. I have it open all day anyway and can click an extra button.

              I gather Tom's way will start me with an email window in Outlook and insert the address automatically and all I have to do is insert the body text and click SEND. Can I also have a preselected text message automatically inserted into the email along with the address?

              Let's say I have 5 emails which I use repeatedly (form letters)in a database look-up window(?). I select one of the five, go to the next (email) field and click to generate the email which then includes not only the email address but also inserts the body text. Possible? Practical? (Guess I could always use cut and paste but...)

              And, thanks a lot for your response. It's appreciated.

                RE: Any email and hyperlink capabilities in Versio

                You can additionally pass data to the body of the message. Using Tom Patten's example:

                dim global vMail as C
                vMail = alltrim(Your_Email_adddress.value)
                'rem LF will force a line feed
                LF = "%0A"

                sys_open("mailto:"+vMail+"?subject= Enter the Subject Here" + "&body= Line1 Data" + LF + "Line2 Data")

                There is a limit to the total byte count you can pass in the function, but I don't remember what it is.
                You have to have a5v4.5 build 266 to run this.
