Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Systems Analysis Help with Problem

    Scenario:
    I have 3 tables

    "Bases" with relevant fields BASE,AREA and UNIQUE
    "Operator" with relevant fields OPERATOR,UNIQUE & B_UNIQUE
    "Logfile" with relevant fields OP_UNIQUE and B_UNIQUE

    Logfile->Op_unique = Operator->Unique
    Logfile->b_unique = Bases->unique
    Operator->b_unique = Bases->unique
    click on a button and:
    a) I want to be able to enter a Location value reply=UI_GET_TEXT()
    b) query Table Bases with (containsi(bases->bases,'reply').or.containsi(bases->area,'reply')
    to give me a list of b_uniques that match the location value

    c) query Table Operator for matching b_uniques

    d) Display the query on a form and allow selection of Operator by double click on embedded browse.

    e) enter selected values into relevant fields in logfile record.

    in isolation I can get a), b), d) & e) to work, but how do I get b) thru d) to work?

    TIA

    RE: Systems Analysis Help with Problem

    Graham,

    Maybe I'm just tired, but your message is difficult for me to follow. Pardon me if this post makes little sense.

    I think the trouble you'll have is with step C, since the number of potential matching 'unique' field values from the Bases table is infinite. To do the query at step C you have to build a filter expression that uses a series of .OR. statements...

    this .or. that .or. the other .or. and so on until you have joined all the relevant 'unique' values found in the first query you run on the BASES table. I think you'll hit the expression length limit before you've dealt with them all in some cases.

    The only alternative that occurs to me would be to store the series of 'unique' field values you get from the query of the Bases table in an array. Then step through the Operator table one record at a time, scan the array to see if the current b_unique value is in the array. If it is mark the record, then fetch the next and repeat. Leave the records in Operator that don't have matching B_unique field values unmarked. When this is finished only the matching records will have been marked. Run your query against Operator table to show only marked records.

      RE: Systems Analysis Help with Problem

      Hi Tom,
      sorry I haven't got back to you sooner, I'm in the middle of changing ISP and forgot that I was signed on on my old account, doh!
      Tried yoiur suggestion and got too bogged down, so I've tried another approach which seems to get me closer to a solution.
      see attached word document for what I hope is a better explanation,

      Ciou,

        RE: Systems Analysis Help with Problem

        I've narrowed the problem down to the OnDblClk script on the BaseOps_show form.

        Although the query is picking up the correct entries,the OnDblClk script is not getting the correct "Operator" table record as the "Browse1" embedded browse is made up of fields form bothe the parent table (Bases) and the child (Operator). It seems to either pick-up the first record in the query list or a somewhat random choice of either the first or the one selected. Any Ideas on how to get the OnDBlClk script to get the correct record and its values? Everything else seems to work?

            Check the properties of the UNIQUE column in the browse on BaseOps_show form. Since you have a UNIQUE field in the primary table, and also in the child table, and since your browse is based on the set (with each row containing values from both primary and child tables). You should verify that your column displaying a 'UNIQUE' field value is displaying the field from the right table. I should think you'd want it to come from the child table, and not the primary table. If the browse is displaying the primary table value, that may explain what you're seeing.

              I've checked all the columns, they are the correct ones, I've also sorted out the "randomness", the baseops_show form was not getting closed properly so each time it opened a new version, but, took the values from the original each time. The problem is that no matter which record you double-click on in the browse only the values of the FIRST record are ever found, does anyone have a suggestion on how to get around this?

                  Graham,

                  It's truly difficult to offer useful suggestions without being able to work directly with the database. If possible, consider uploading a working model here. You've done a good job of describing the problem. As complete as any I've ever seen. But the interaction between the flattenquery() call, and opening the called dialog form, with a final return back to the original form will be better diagnosed if we can actually work with an example of the database in real time.

                  In the meantime, you might consider two different things:

                  1) base the called dialog form on the child table alone.

                  or

                  2) create a new set, inverting the original sequence of tables, so that the table that was child is now primary, linked 1:1 to the table that was primary.

                  Both of these ideas will require that a new form be built from which the user can select the desired entry.
