Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    dropdown list

I am wanting to put a drop down list. but why can't I add to the list on the fly meaning:

Instead of having to put all the possible answers in teh list why can't you add to the list with new answers as you go. If i had a list that had cat and dog in it and the next record in that field i was adding to i wanted elephant why can't i do that

    RE: dropdown list

    Tony,

The first drop down list that comes to mind is the simple list lookup, defined in field rules. If this is what you're talking about I don't think the program supports adding new items to the drop down list. The list of values is defined in the field rule, and the field rule cannot be modified 'on the fly' while doing data entry.

You could use a table lookup field rule instead, storing the new field values in a table, instead of in the field rule.

If this isn't what you're talking about, please explain further.

      RE: dropdown list

I am in the early stages of learning A5, however I can tell you that Approach has that very feature you are looking for, a field box & list. You can both tigers and gators and the list keeps growing. But I would not leave A5 for a thing like that.

        RE: dropdown list

        I'm in v 4 forum (I don't know about v 5) but in the
field rules under lookup you have a option to use
'previous values' If you have cat & dog then you can
add elephant. If you are using the simple list then
you can't add on the fly. Using the previous values as
you start typing it will automatically pull up the closes
        value.

        Hope this helps

Jerry, as strange as it may sound I didn't know that's how that feature worked. I suppose Alpha Five is creating the previous values list with a quick scan of the table. Wonder how performance holds up with a bit table?

              Tom

I don't know about big tables but I have used it in a few cases in the program that you helped me with last week. The only problem is, if you mispell a word, it stays that way forever. (At least I don't know how to eliminate it.) I also don't konw how large the file is allowed to grow. Perhaps someone out there knows.

              Regards JIm
